A FitLit Head-to-Head (with Giveaways!)

So you know how the other day we tried out the head-to-head format for the workout DVD review? Well it went so well, and ya’ll liked it so much that we decided to duplicate the format with the following health- and fitness-related books. So as any good fight begins…say it with me…Let’s get it on! (Because apparently “Let’s get ready to rumble” is trademarked by Michael Buffer.)

I’ll be honest. I had an unfair bias against this book. My husband hates the New York Yankees (he even has a shirt declaring so), and Jorge Posada is, in fact, a Yankee. So, I didn’t have high expectations for this book, which is written by Jorge and his wife Laura. But after reading it, I put my familial hate for the Yankees aside. (It’s hard to be a Kansas City Royals fan, folks.)

This is an excellent read for anyone with a family, Yankees supporter or not. It gives you solid and creative ideas for making your family less of a “family” (dysfunctional or not) and more of a “team” that is focused on wellness.

The entire book has a fantastic message about how being healthy and balanced can improve your relationships and make a positive impact on the next generation. And it talks all about fun snacks and meals to make with your kids and fun games to play, such as tag, dodge ball, bowling…the list goes on and on.

Best for: If you have a family and want to be a “healthy team,” this is your book.

YourBodyBookYour Body: The Missing Manual

When I first picked up this book, I thought “Oh, great another Dummies-esque guide book.” And then I saw the cute dog on the cover…and then I opened the pages and started reading…and then I was hooked.

This book may not have a flashy title, but it is FASCINATING. I spent an entire evening reading fun facts about the body to my husband, and not once did he get annoyed that I was interrupting the “big game” because the facts were that cool. The book goes through every part and system of the body, but in a really engaging and often laugh-out-loud way. Much of the book is fitness related, but it also dives into other awesome things that your body does. Trust me, it’s all fascinating. Even the chapters that sound boring or think you already know all about the subject matter are captivating.

Best for: Anyone with a curiosity of how these darn things that we walk around in all day work.

Fit Bottom Line: Okay, so these books are totally and completely different, yet pretty darn awesome. If you’re without kids, go with Your Body: The Missing Manual. If you have child in tow, go with the Posada’s Fit Home Team.
