A Coach in the Hand is Worth One in the Gym

I don’t know if you’ve noticed, dear readers, but I’m kind of the new kid on the block. Not just as the newbie writer for these fit bottomed ladies, but to the world of fitness period.

Jenn’s been on me for YEARS to start loving my body, but as you all know, you have to make that decision for yourself.  Something in you just clicks and you fall in love with feeling fit. End of story.

About a year ago, I started training for a half marathon to get my heart in shape. Going into the gym was a hard, hard task for me. I was so intimidated by the machines and the trainers. So you can imagine how stoked I was when Samara, the Gym Coach and trainer on the cards, sent us her Gym Coach cards to try out. Gym-phobes, fear no more.

TheGymCoach is this nifty group of cards you stick on a key ring and take with you to the gym.  Separated into colors, each week contains great workouts, including warm-ups and cool downs. Each section also contains picture demonstrations as well as short paragraphs that instruct you on how to do everything. You get to skip the fear, own the workouts and become your very own teacher, young grasshopper.

I’ve been using the cards and attempting to help a friend find her inner gym bug in the process. I actually got in trouble with a gym manager because he thought I was training her without my license.  SWEET! I know I should have felt bad, but all I was thinking was how bad ass it was that I fooled the gym gurus. Basically, the workouts are relevant and effective.

One stipulation I have: If you’re totally green, this isn’t the trainer for you. While the cards do a decent job of showing you how the exercise should be completed, it can’t sit there and make sure your elbows are where they should be. It can’t tell you your butt is sticking out properly for the squat to be effective, etc. Don’t be discouraged my fellow newbies, though! When in doubt, ask. It only takes once or twice before your body catches on and you start rockin’ like a true fit bottomed gym gal. —Tish
