Drink Up: Filtered Water in Your Water Bottle

filtered-water-bottlesI’m a geek, and I like fresh, clean water. So when WaterGeeks offered to let us review one of their Pure Blue Filtered Water Bottles (in yellow, my current color obsession!), I was pumped to have filtered water with me wherever my day or workout took me.

These filtered water bottles have a few selling points that immediately caught our attention. First, they’re BPA-free (hallelujah!). Second, they’re dishwasher safe (easy-peasy cleaning!). Third—and the most obvious reason—is that the filters reduce chlorine, chromium, heavy metals and other icky contaminants that may be lurking in your tap water. Lastly, they come in fun colors (see note on yellow above) and have an ergonomic design.

Obviously, they have A LOT of things going for them, and they’re certainly more eco-friendly than drinking disposable-plastic bottle after disposable-plastic bottle of water. They’re also convenient because you really can get clean water in pretty much any place you go. And while I will say that the water these things put out is quite delicious and fresh-tasting, it comes with a price. A price paid in time and squeaks. Yes, you read that correctly.

See, when you go to drink the water, you can’t just drink it like you would out of a normal water bottle. Instead you have to tip it so that gravity is working with you, and then suck it through the top. And not to softball it up for jokes, but you have to suck it pretty hard for just a little bit of water.

So when you’re working out really hard and just want a swig of water? Not your best bet. Then there’s the squeaks. Every time I went to get a drink, my filter would start making this squeaking noise, similar to the noise that a happy guinea pig makes. At first, it’s cute. When you’re thirsty and just want water, it makes you reconsider the need to drink filtered water at all.

At $19.99, it is pretty affordable—and again—it’s so earth-friendly and brightly colored that I want to love it. I really do. But, honestly, I’d only use this when in a pinch, as I’d rather plan ahead and just bring filtered water from home in a big Nalgene.

Our final take? While it’s obviously awesome to be able to drink filtered water on the go, just know that this water bottle comes with a few quirks and, well, squeaks. —Jenn
