Trying iPhone Fitness Apps: We’ve Gone App-sh@t!

2. SparkRecipes: FINALLY the perfect recipes app! I have been searching for new ideas for cooking up healthy stuff. Of course the folks at SparkPeople would be the ones to get it right. The app lets you choose by category, course, cuisine, dietary needs (hallelujah!) or occasion, then shares what you can make and how. I hate complicated recipes that require hours of prep time and include ingredients I’ve never heard of. Not an issue with this app! I chose a lactose-intolerant option and instantly got the ingredients, directions and nutritional facts on that bad boy. There’s even a video section where you can watch Chef Meg do her thing. Conversion tables, timers…someone was listening to the normal folks of the world cry over complicated and impractical recipes and came to the healthy eating rescue!

3. SparkPeople:  SparkPeople is spoiling the mess out of us with apps! This iPhone fitness app functions like the SparkPeople website so that you can track your health and fitness goals while on the move. You use your online login information and let the tracking begin. Track your meals, your fitness, your water—the SparkPeople app does it all! I’m infamous for giving up on fitness journaling. I forget to log in…I’m lazy…I have my reasons, but this app makes it a heck of a lot easier to manage my logs. Like I said, my iPhone is glued to my hand, so health monitoring just got cooler and easier. Adding food is a bit of a pain, though. Some of the things I eat weren’t recognized perfectly by the app. That makes it a challenge if you’re looking for nutrition specifics, but the same applies for the website, so if you’re in love with SparkPeople, you’ll love the app, too.

You really need to try “Get Running”. It’s a GREAT C25K app that works with your iTunes. I have tried several and this is seriously the. best. one.

I have been using My Fitness Pal for over a year now as my diet/exercise journal. I have lost 30 pounds!!! Definitely my favorite app!

I really like Nike’s free app Nike Training Center. Tons of great routines that allow me to pick my workout based on my goal (cardio, strength, toning) for the day and what body parts I want to work on. Plus, you unlock special workouts based on how many minutes you workout with the app.

    Hi Tish,
Have you seen Fleetly yet? We’ve created a fun site/iphone app/community where you can track your fitness, create and share workouts, compete against friends, or yourself, in challenges. We even take all your exercise into account to give you a single Fitness Level number that makes it super easy to track your progress and keep you motivated (it starts to drop when you’ve been sitting on the couch for too long).

I also wanted to say thank you. I write a weekly blog post on Fleetly that highlights exercise related articles from around the web and I often check the FBG’s blog.
