Trying iPhone Fitness Apps: We’ve Gone App-sh@t!

4. Gymboss: In a nut shell, the Gymboss app is just a fancy timer for folks who like interval-timed workouts. You still have to come up with what you’re doing, so this one works better for folks who already know what they’re doing in a workout. My boyfriend uses this app for his spin classes and bootcamps and loves it. Just remember to turn your phone to airplane mode so that texts and phone calls don’t interrupt. The only downside? You’ll need an internet connection in order to get this iPhone fitness app to work, so make sure you have wi-fi capabilities wherever you decide to work out.

5. NutriScanner: Maybe I’m inept at scanning bar codes, but I tried to scan a proper picture for this app four times and each time I failed. Then I gave up. I’d rather just look at the information on my food on the packaging itself (or in the SparkPeople app) and make the judgement call at that point. Just an extra step I don’t really need. I love apps, but only if they make life easier. This was not my favorite.

6. Fooducate: A disclaimer pops up when you first open this iPhone app warning you not to use it as a substitute for going to see your nutritionist. I love that they advocate for nutritionists, but if you’re not supposed to trust this thing 100 percent, then who in the world did the app creators consult in order to create it? (Guessing they’re just protecting themselves from the sue-happy.) That aside, this is a handy-dandy app that I can’t stop playing with. The app allows you to scan any food item’s bar code, and then it will list healthier alternatives for you. I scanned my coffee creamer bar code and it told me there’s trans fat in it—even if the label says zero. What?! My app reveals the sneakiness, plus it suggests something better for me to eat. There’s even a section for contests and giveaways as well. LOVE fooducate!

You really need to try “Get Running”. It’s a GREAT C25K app that works with your iTunes. I have tried several and this is seriously the. best. one.

I really like Nike’s free app Nike Training Center. Tons of great routines that allow me to pick my workout based on my goal (cardio, strength, toning) for the day and what body parts I want to work on. Plus, you unlock special workouts based on how many minutes you workout with the app.

    Hi Tish,
Have you seen Fleetly yet? We’ve created a fun site/iphone app/community where you can track your fitness, create and share workouts, compete against friends, or yourself, in challenges. We even take all your exercise into account to give you a single Fitness Level number that makes it super easy to track your progress and keep you motivated (it starts to drop when you’ve been sitting on the couch for too long).

I also wanted to say thank you. I write a weekly blog post on Fleetly that highlights exercise related articles from around the web and I often check the FBG’s blog.
