Checking out a Rykä Event and the New ‘Desire’ Running Shoe

ryka desire

I tried this black and pink pair of the Rykä Desire, and my students thought they looked great on!

This post is written by our NYC contributing writer Margo Donohue, who’s a fitness professional and blogger at Brooklyn Fit Chick. Since Margo lives in the Big Apple, she’ll be helping us cover events every now and again—just like this recent Rykä event!

If you have ever wondered what it would be like to attend a sneaker-filled press event in the middle of the afternoon at the Ganesvoort Hotel, then get ready for some fun because I was lucky enough to be invited by the folks at Rykä to do just that.

Rykä is celebrating 25 years in the business of creating some of the best workout shoes on the market. (Kelly Ripa is a HUGE fan and designs for them as well.) Plus, as a bonus, they are designed specifically—and only—for women. I have been a big fan of their products for years, so this was a very cool event for me to attend.

Yeah, Kelly Ripa does kick ass.

Rykä is currently selling some of the lightest shoes for running right now, and they offered me a pair of the style Desire to try out. Now, I’ll be honest. I am not much of a runner. In fact, I usually tell people that if they see me jogging down the street—no matter if I am wearing workout gear or not—ask me if everything is okay and make sure no one is chasing me! (For real.)

However, I immediately felt lighter and rather feisty when I tried them on and decided to put them to immediate use at my local track. The shoe offers a “7-millimeter heel-to-toe variance” and is a slip-on, which is so very, very convenient. I have to say the Desire felt great the entire run, which made a big difference in my attitude about the possibility of actually entering a race. (Not promising a marathon any time soon, but a triathlon doesn’t look as scary now!)

The Desire retails for $75 and comes in an array of colors, so if you are in “sneaker shopping” mode right now, you will want to check out this new collection for yourself.

Can you believe that this is one of the first times Fit Bottomed Girls has reviewed a Rykä product?! And we love the idea of a slip-on shoe! Tell us, are you a fan of their apparel and footwear, too? —Margo

I’ve never tried on a Ryka shoe, but slip-on sounds great. I just purchased a new pair of running shoes (love!) so I’m not in the market, but very curious to try on if I get a chance. Thanks!

I am looking for a shoe for kickboxing. My normal running shoes are just way too bulky and do not work well with all of the different running and movements we do and so I am looking for a low heel to toe variance, however, I prefer trying on athletic shoes before buying as I am different sizes in different brands. Are these Ryka Desire shoes available in any sporting goods stores or only online?

    Hi Melanie,

They are avilable in stores and online. I think they would be great for kickboxing! I was impressed with how light yet secure they felt.
