An Apple a Day Keeps the Fatigue At Bay

Oh, how I love all of the groovy nutritional tidbits from this site! I swear the media loves to tell us what we can’t eat, but rarely do they give us the key to our magical gastro-centric g-spot. People ask me all the time what to eat in order to do “fill in the blank with your workout of choice” and my answer is always the same: Get down and dirty in the Eats section of the site.

It’s the perfect place to go when you’re overwhelmed by cookbooks and cooking sites. You may know the foods you should be eating, but suffer from what ails me—the “I-don’t-know-what-the-heck-to-do-with-this-healthy-vegetable” syndrome. For example, I never know how to pair healthy foods. Up until this year, I didn’t even know how to make a proper smoothie for Pete’s sake!

Because of the other FBGs though, I’m now obsessed with almond butter with apples. Every day (at around 11 a.m.) I chop up an apple, grab a spoon and go to town on some apple slices and a Trader Joe’s version of the good butter. I no longer crash. I feel nice and full, like I ate something hearty and delicious AND I know it’s good for me because my stomach’s silence tells me so. Plus, thanks to the Dole event I attended last year , I now know that apples are a top source of quercetin, which preliminary research suggests may help improve endurance. Oh yeahhhh!

For that reason alone, I could die a happy well-nourished woman! What about you? What snacks have saved you from utter starvation and tummy damnation? —Tish

I’m sensitive to sugar. Even pairing an apple with nut butters will send me into voracious hunger an hour or so later. What helps me is trail mix. Not the kind with peanuts and M&Ms. I like the kind with walnuts, cranberries or blueberries, and almonds. The berries have just enough sugar to make it sweet, but not enough to make me crash.

I love me some apples, but that is the one food that I swear makes me hungrier as soon as I’m done eating it. I’m sure if I paired it with some protein and healthy fat, it would help. But I’m always amazed at how apples trigger my hunger. More than any other fruit. Weird.

I may be exaggerating here… but without Apples I don’t think I could get through the day!!

I tend to have one before lunchtime around 10:30 and then one before dinner about 3:30, just to keep hunger off and I must say that I feel better for it. It seems that if I have my apple binge I eat a smaller lunch and a smaller dinner, which can only be a good thing!

Oh and I love apples too..I just love to eat them raw. I just grab a bite whenever I’m getting hungry. Just to get rid of hunger for a few minutes I grab an apple and eat it. Experts also says it’s also good for your teeth.

I love Fuji apples and nut butter but because I often use nut butter in my morning smoothie, later in the day I will add just a bit to vanilla greek yogurt to make an apple dip. Sometimes I will use plain yogurt and stevia. Cuts down on calories and is amazing!

I get hungry later at night and I find a red delicious apple with peanut butter has just the right amount of sweet to be a tasty desert, while still being filling enough to keep my late night snacking at bay.

I just ate an apple with almond butter. They are my favorite afternoon snack, which makes sense if they boost your energy, since I tend to hit a slump around 3:00.

I’ve never heard of apples making folks hungrier! That makes me appreciate the snack even more…I don’t know what I’d do without them! I like the trail mix idea for those with apple aversions. Good thinking gumshoes!
