Have Your Hummus, Cocktail and Smoothie—And Eat It, Too

Three things we like? Hummus, cocktails and smoothies. So, when Frankly Fresh reached out, asking if we’d like to taste-test a couple of varieties of its Hummus Smoothies and Hummus Cocktails, well, it seemed like a no-brainer. Although we weren’t entirely sure how those things would taste when paired together, to be honest…

Turns out, pretty darn good.

We’ve seen unique flavor combinations in hummus before but nothing like this. We’re talking Dirty Martini, Bloody Mary, Four Berry Dip and Tropical Mango Dip! Unique, right? Right. All have an ingredient list you can pronounce with real foods, and each two-tablespoon serving has about 60 calories, 3 grams of sugar and 3.5 grams of fat. They’re also gluten-free, cholesterol-free, and contain no saturated fat or trans fat. Oh, and the Cocktail Hummus doesn’t have alcohol in it. (We’re excited and bummed about that.)

Now, let’s chat about the taste of the Hummus Cocktails. The Dirty Martini has hints of pimento olives and sea salt, and is simply delicious—if you’re a fan of the uber-dirty martini, as I am. It’s super tasty with not-too-salty tortilla chips, pita or baby carrots. The Bloody Mary hummus is infused with hints of tomato and celery and tastes just like what you think it would: a bloody mary in hummus-dip form. Perfectly yummy and salty, it’s best when dipping celery, cucumber slices and jicama sticks in it.

Then there are the Hummus Smoothies. While these are still good and definitely unique, I tended to like these less than the Hummus Cocktails. Part of that reason is because I think salty flavors go better with hummus than sweet ones do—but that’s my personal preference. Without a doubt though, these are sweet. Four Berry Dip tastes of strawberry, blueberry, raspberry and blackberry, and you can totally taste the mango, papaya and passion fruit in Tropical Mango. These were best, in my opinion, with apple slices or pita chips, and I preferred the Four Berry Dip to the Tropical Mango. Something about the acidity of the Tropical Mango didn’t sit well with my stomach, but sometimes papaya and I don’t get along. (Don’t-Read-This-If-You’re-Eating Warning: I think papaya sometimes tastes like vomit, and apparently I’m not the only one after a quick Google search.)

Weird papaya aversions aside, these hummus flavors are indeed…Frankly Fresh. Super fun, I could totally see myself picking up some of the Hummus Cocktails for a party or a tailgate—and possibly even pairing them with the real drink. You can’t beat the ingredient list, and as long as you keep your serving size to one or two, it’s a snack you can feel really, really good about it!

Have you tried any Frankly Fresh Hummus Cocktails or Smoothies flavors? If so, which ones do you like? If not, which would you like to try? And to all, what flavors of hummus would you like them to concoct? —Jenn
