A Paleo Dessert Recipe You Just Have to Try…

They say necessity is the mother of all creation, and “they” are right. After a particularly hard workout one evening, just a few days into doing my 30-day Paleo challenge (if you’re interested in going Paleo and haven’t read them yet, be sure to check out my Paleo tips and my overall thoughts on the “diet” aspect of it, too!), I was craving something very, very non-Paleo: sweet, creamy, thick ice cream and enough chocolate to make even Willy Wonka roll his eyes back with happiness. So, out of nowhere, I created this Paleo dessert recipe. It has since become a Paleo dessert standby when creamy or chocolaty cravings strike! And I promise it’s good enough to try, even if you’re not Paleo and have no interest in eating Paleo. It’s just that good. Promise.

Paleo Dessert Recipe: Banana Ice Cream With Chocolate-Almond Topping

Serves: 2

Nutritional facts per serving: 200 calories, 9 grams fat, 32 grams carbs, 4.5 grams fiber, 16 grams sugar, 3 grams protein

Ingredients
1 tbsp almond butter
1 tbsp cocoa powder
2 tbsp almond or coconut milk
honey to taste (a drizzle works for me, but I really, really like dark chocolate)
2 frozen bananas, peeled

Directions
1. First things first, you must own one of these Yonanas contraptions. It turns frozen bananas into ice cream. No, for real. Only bananas go in, and they come out pureed and taste like ice cream. It’s magic.

2. But I get ahead of myself…before making the “ice cream” part of this Paleo dessert recipe, you need to make the topping. So grab a medium bowl, and mix these together. (Note: My obsession with Trader Joe’s is on full display, eh? Its Almond Butter with Roasted Flaxseeds is a MUST TRY in this recipe, although any almond butter will work.)

It might take some smooshing with a fork and a little stirring, but you should end up with a concoction that looks like this.

3. Now it’s banana ice cream time. Bust out those frozen bananas and put them in the Yonanas!

Don’t be afraid if you have to push kind of hard to get them through—and no worries if it takes a full banana going in until you get some ice cream in your bowl. Such a pretty sight…

And a special tip? Don’t forget to scoop out the banana remains from the inner workings of the Yonanas. There’s a lot of good stuff in there that you don’t want to miss out on!

4. Ya’ll, we’re almost done. Now you just divide your banana faux ice cream between two bowls, and drizzle the chocolate-almond sauce evenly over each. Then, eat it ! The ice cream starts to get more sticky than creamy as time goes by, so no dilly dallying. Enjoy!

Booyah. A Paleo dessert recipe that is filling, nutritious and will satisfy a dessert craving. It may not be the most beautiful dessert you ever saw, but I promise the banana-chocolate-almond taste more than makes up for it! And it only takes about 10 minutes to put together—and even less than that if you tag-team it and one person makes the sauce while one person pulverizes the bananas. It’s really team work at its tastiest.

Now tell me, do you have any Paleo dessert recipes that you love? Will you try this one? Do you have a Yonanas (I know they’re $60 but so worth it!), too? I’d love a few new ideas, ladies! After all, one day I might get sick of this one. —Jenn

I had never heard of a Yonana!

I’ve heard of people doing frozen bananas in their food processor to make “fro-yo” out of it, tho. Interesting!

What about the Justin’s Chocolate Hazelnut Butter? The grown-up version of Nutella. Try it you’ll like it!

    2 bananas
    1/4 c almond butter
1/4 c coconut milk or water (your choice)
    2 tbls cocoa
    1 tbls vanilla

blend together (I don’t have a blender or food processor so use one of the immersion stick mixers), pour in Popsicle molds & freeze – very similar I’m sure to what you made above since the ingredients almost match! these are smooth like a fudgesicle.

I have made my banana soft serve in a food processor and also a regular blender. Very easy.

    Your topping sounds good.
