It’s a Two-for-One With the Aurorae Synergy Yoga Towel-Mat

yoga-mat-585You know how it’s always kind of a pain to maneuver around both your mat and your towel when you’re in hot yoga? Like, you don’t want to sweat all over your mat—so you need the towel—but everything just keeps shifting here and bunching there and instead of finding your om, all you can think of is straightening the darn thing out? I can’t be the only one with this sweaty problem, right? Gonna pretend you said “right!” because the Aurorae Yoga Synergy yoga towel-mat combo was created to help solve this issue, and we got to try it!

First, one side of the yoga towel-mat—the side that’s placed on the ground—is nice and sticky. It’s eco-safe and has 5 millimeters of comfort to make you feel like you’re down-dogging on a really stable and comfy surface. It’s the type of yoga mat you’re used to. Then, on the other side, you get this nice and soft, ultra-absorbent towel that’s built in. It’s like a yoga carpet that you want to curl up on. (Seriously, it takes corpse pose to the next level.) Free from phthalates, latex and silicone, it doesn’t have any kind of a smell, and it’s 72-inches long to fit even the longest of yoga legs. I got the purple one and even got a few comments on it from people in class: “Is that a towel and mat in one?” Cool.

And, indeed it is cool. However, it takes a bit of work for the no-slip to go into full effect on the towel-mat—at least for me. When the Aurorae Synergy is totally dry, the towel does slip. But as things heat up and your hands and feet get warm and moisty (ew), they start to stick better and even imprint into the mat a bit (which is a really nice effect). Now, I’m one of those people who is cursed with always having cold hands and feet (ask my husband; it’s the ongoing joke that I have ice cubes for feet), so even after 10 minutes of yoga, I was still slipping on the towel. For weirdos like me, Aurorae recommends priming the yoga towel-mat with a few squirts of water from a spray bottle. And that did work for me (I also tried some of this natural Meditative Mist Aromatherapy Spray that was sooo lovely), but I still had to wait until I really, really starting sweating until I started to fully stick to the mat. (It’s not like you want to stop every three minutes and spray your mat, ya know?)

Assuming that I’m a bit of a freak though, if you’re a regular hot yoga fan and don’t have hands and feet that maintain below-freezing temps, this towel-mat could be a super good fit for you. At about $60, it’s not cheap, but it’s certainly a step (or 80) above your regular yoga mat. And, the thing is machine washable! How freakin’ cool is that?!

Do you struggle with the yoga-mat-and-towel combo thing? Love to get sweaty in  yoga? Have ice cubes for toes and fingers, too? Share! —Jenn
