We Learn How Olympians Lolo Jones and Alex Morgan ‘Do More’

olympians-585Lolo and me, no big deal.

Living in New York City, I didn’t think I would ever find myself getting into a bobsled, much less with a world-class Olympic athlete. But that is exactly what happened to me at the Degree Do: More event that was recently held in the Altman building.

Walking in, I was greeted by the sight of U.S track star Lolo Jones and Alex Morgan, who is a member of the U.S. Women’s Soccer Team. These two star athletes were sitting with a group of women talking about quick beauty fixes while working out—just like you and me!

Degree started this campaign to get women to “do more,” as well as challenge themselves physically in new ways—like Lolo and Alex are clearly doing. At the event, Lolo told us that she’s now on the Women’s Bobsled National Team and is getting into fighting shape to compete in the Olympics next year. (This lady is no slacker!)

Alex with her new favorite activity: paddle-boarding!

She talked about how she prepares for the 70-plus mph rides in the bobsled—she does single-leg squats to build her speed and strength! This awesome athlete also gave all of us a chance to take a seat in the official team bobsled (sponsored by BMW no less!). Not sure if I would ever have the guts to actually fly down a chute in one of those things, but I can now say I definitely have a better feeling for what it might be like.

Alex helped lead a class on a SurfSET board to simulate a day on the water. (I will be reviewing a SurfSET class for FBG very soon!) If you have not tried paddle-boarding yet, try to do so as soon as possible. It’s definitely a tough workout—but not near as intense or intimidating as surfing.

Have you ever wanted to try a more intense sport? What would you do if time and money weren’t an issue? —Margo
