brooks-running-winter

Baby, it’s effing cold outside. Like, winter — in full effect — cold. But that doesn’t mean we’re not out there running. Oh, no. We’ve just had to gear up properly for the colder temps. And thankfully, due to our ongoing ambassador role with Brooks Running (our product reviews are totally our honest opinions though!), we have been decked out in winter running essentials that perform well and look cute. So say hello to three Brooks Running items that are keeping our winter runs toasty warm! Oh, and you can win them …

3 Winter Running Essentials From Brooks Running

1. Seamless Arm Warmers. If you haven’t jumped on the whole arm-warmers bandwagon yet, it’s time to try ‘em! They. Are. Awesome. Light, comfy and warm, Brooks Running’s Seamless Arm Warmers are fabulous to put on at the start of a run, and then as you warm up, you can just push them down and, hey, free arms! These are seamless, too, so no chafing, and they’re snug but don’t cut off your circulation. Not to mention that they’re super soft!

2. Pulse Lite Glove II. If we had three words to describe this running glove, we’d pick: lightweight, breathable and high-tech. But seeing that we can use as many words as we want (yay!), we’ll go on to tell you that this slightly fitted glove is great for training or race day, has that cool retroreflectiveness we keep telling you about and has a finger pad that allows you to work your cellie. Oh, and they’re cute and soft — and only $25. Boom.

3. Heater Hog Beanie. Hog all the heat with this simple yet cute beanie that’s super soft and has special fabric that pulls moisture away from your skin while also generating heat back to your body. It’s light, but keeps you oh-so-warm. Totally worth the $22 price tag.

When I ran along the harbor the other day as it was snowing, I got to see the snow falling across the harbor which was absolutely gorgeous. The grey sky plus the snow fall made the run feel cozy- I felt like I was the only person outside (which is totally possible). Plus, a policeman on the street told me how “hardcore” I was to be running!

I learned to love running in the cold (trained for my first half last winter with Team in Training – Go Team!) so I couldn’t wait for cooler temps to come around. I’d much rather bundle than sweat and feel miserable in the summer.

    I love how my
cheeks take the brunt of the cold in the winter and in exchange the cold wind gives me seeet rosy cheeks!.

I love running in the Winter because once it’s done I give myself double credit. First for just getting out and running and second for dealing with the weather.

  26. kirsten says

  34. Deb E says

I have to admit I have it easy here in California. I don’t use my heat, although it’s there if I need it (just a ceramic heater in the bathroom!) Yes steaming hot coffee is a great motivating factor for running in the cold. I love how tired I am afterwards and love to warm up with a flavored coffee and fluffy socks to sooth my feet!

  35. Heather says

I am living in lovely Florida, so we don’t have the winter weather like others, but when it does get cold it feels like a new adventure when out running.

I don’t like to be cold so I thought I would hate winter running but it’s my favorite time of year (much better than our 100 degree, humid summers). I love feeling actual cool air on my skin (as opposed to the soup that makes up the summer air), and it doesn’t hurt that I run a heck of a lot faster!

  43. Lindsay says

In Florida running in the winter means running when it feels amazing outside! Instead of 100 degrees and 100% humidity.

  44. Elizabeth says

Running in the winter is great because it’s nice and cold outside! I’m not a hot-weather girl and if it’s even slightly too hot, I just won’t run :-/ The warm cocoa or canela (cinnamon tea) after is an added bonus.

  45. Marissa says

Surprisingly, my best runs are in the cold weather. Not sure if it’s the fact that I’m one of the few runners out there (giving me more room to dance and jam out on the running paths!) or just the beautiful, yet eerie, stillness of the city, but whenever I crush 5+ mile runs in sub-30 degree weather, I feel amazing.

  46. says

I love running in the winter because it makes me feel even MORE badass as I’m running AND especially when I’m done. “Yeah, it’s 1 below and I just ran 5 miles outside, ain’t no thang!” haha! Living in South Dakota it gets pretty cold and windy but nothing stops me. ..well, except for the latest -32* windchill, in which case I had to run on a treadmill, which I’m thankful to have access to, but it can be torture for the long hauls. I just need more cold gear to layer up!

  47. Carrie says

I like to run in the winter because it’s so peaceful and quiet. Also, running at night in my neighborhood when all the holiday lights are on is amazing!

  48. April says

This is my first winter running outside!! I love it, but trying to dress appropriately is HARD since you get warm as you run! Love the quiet of the snow and seeing the steam come off your body after stopping!!!

also just switched to brooks shoes!!

  49. Cat says

Running in winter just makes you look and feel so bada$$! I work in an office and sometimes have to wear arm warmers under my sweaters to stay warm, maybe a beanie would be a good hint that they need to up the thermostat just a bit ;)

This gear will definitely help me with my running on the soccer field for sure! Thus would be great!

I would love to win this awesome gear! Then if my friends talk me into a race before spring, I’ll be ready!! ;)

  52. Stephanie says

I live in Paris, and I like running in winter because the streets are much more peaceful in the city during more of the day. Also it makes me feel like a running rockstar to brave the cold!

  53. Lynn T. says

Ironically I contemplated this on Sunday, as it was below zero in Minnesota (-7 for my run). I listed the reasons in my head as I ran along – you warm up fast but never get hot; it is beautiful and peaceful to observe a fresh snowy landscape as you run; you are completely alone (most of the time) – but I think my best reason was found at the end of the run, when I entered my house and my husband said “your pink cheeks are my favorite thing about you.” That, was my reason to run in the cold!

  54. Amy says

I run in my neighborhood and during the warmer months, there are always other runners, walkers and bikers out with me. But now that the really cold weather has hit, it’s usually just me with an occasional bundled up dog walker looking at me like I’m crazy. Plus, the cold air clears my head like nothing else!

  55. Cressa Marie says

I started training this fall for the first time in my life. I hated running so much before but am loving it now especially as it gets colder. The cold weather has been awesome cause it makes me feel super hard-core to leave my office decked out to run in the rain, cold, snow, etc while everyone else is headed to the bar.

  56. Barbara says

I love running in. The winter because it generally means im training for a sprong race, like the BOSTON MARATHON!

It helps me keep on track with all the awesome goodies that are around this time of year (i.e.- Xmas cookies!)

  58. Michelle Thayer says

I haven’t tried running in the winter but if I win this could be my reason to start! All 3 items would allow me to be warm without the added bulk.

  59. Liz says

  64. Liz C. says

I like to run in the winter (and cool evenings) because when I’m done I go home to *snuggle* with my man and he warms me up nice and hot!!! And I hate the treadmill – so boring!

  65. Rhonda says

I love to run in the winter because I like the lower temperatures. I don’t get overheated like in the warmer months. I would love to have better running apparel though. I hate to dress in layers and try to run. Feel so top heavy and uncomfortable.

  66. Michele Lindsey says

I love running in winter so I don’t have to diet come Spring to fit back into my summer clothes!

  67. says

I am running this winter to train for my first triathlon in February. I had my second baby November first, and started training after my 4 week release from the dr. I love winter running because it’s so much more comfortable than summer running. I live in Texas, and during the winter it actually feels good to work up a sweat!

  76. Michelle says

Running in the cold, especially in the morning when it’s still dark out, makes me feel like I can conquer anything. It may be hard and really tough to get through, but the Superwoman feeling I get afterward makes it feel worth it. I can go through my day knowing I’ve already done the hardest part, and I can take on whatever is thrown my way with confidence.

  81. Pam says

Here in Montana, December 7th we were the coldest place on earth! (-50 below wind chill in Great Falls). We have long winters here. If I didn’t love to run in the winter, I would definitely go crazy with cabin fever. I love running uphill towards the snow-covered peaks and then it’s all downhill on the way home. Sometimes, I even get to see the elk who come down from the high elevations in the winter. It does make you feel very alive and then you can go take a good long well-deserved soak in the hot springs.

  82. says

I like to run in the cold because the hot shower after is so much better! Hot showers in the summer after a hot run are awful – but the winter – its amazing! :)

Everything is beautiful outside, the trees are green, the crisp cold air. Nothing better then being outside as the days get shorter :)

  86. Joyce says

  87. Mary Taylor says

I have to force my self out to do it, but once I get outside, my workout is fantastic! Its all in finding the right lightweight layers. These would be awesome!

  107. Adrienne says

Running in less than perfect conditions of
Any type tell me that I’m truly a runner. But getting up, from a cozy bed, when it’s below 35deg and dark, that’s when I really know the runner in me is alive. Plus I train from June to Dec for the Dallas marathon event. This year it was cancelled
Due to a horrible ice storm that left the roads unsafe for runners, spectators and volunteers.
But I still got in my cardio, outside, and am extending my winter weather runs to include marathon
Training for my ‘make-up’ race…still deciding between a couple
Of choices, but it’ll be a Jan or Feb race. Cold weather running is my gift, 4 months of brutal heat and a month
Of ideal temps … To get in 26.2 miles on a Sunday in December. Happy holidays to me!!

I love running this winter for a very specific reason. I am training for my first half marathon and dedicating it to my aunt who was diagnosed with breast cancer in Oct. Just had a double mastectomy in November and starts chemo & radiation the day before Christmas. She is the reason I decided to not give up running. I’m not a good runner and struggle with it. My aunts fight and her strength made me realize that I can do it and she can’t just decide not to have cancer because it’s hard! So why should I get to wuss out on running because it is hard!
I love to run in the winter because I love my Aunt!

  114. Christine says

I run during the winter so that I don’t struggle when the weather warms up. And from a cup-half-full perspective – it’s better than the blazing hot months in the middle of the summer! ;-)

  115. Patty says

I would much prefer to run in the cold then the heat. It makes me feel much more alive and invigorated.

I like running in winter a lot more than in summer – it’s so hot in the South no matter the time of day. I usually run in the morning. In the winter, I really look forward to my first cup of coffee and big bowl of oatmeal as a reward when I finish my run.

  127. Angela says

I’m a fan of short, quick runs and running in winter gives me a reason to go fast to keep warm!
