Want to Go Running in the Snow? These Two Products Make It Possible (Without You Biting It)

STABILicers SPORTrunners

Did the Icebug’s $175 investment have you spitting out your green smoothie in price-disbelief? No worries. I also tried STABILicers SPORTrunners, which go for a much-more wallet-friendly $39.95. These ice cleats strap on to your running shoes, allowing you to transform your fave pair of kicks into running-in-the-snow beasts.

It took me all of maybe three minutes to get these out of the package and onto my running shoes. It takes some stretching and pulling to get your shoes in them, but once they’re in, they’re in. (And if not, they come with a Velcro Powder Strap to keep them securely in place, although I never needed it.) With both studs and tread, like the Icebugs, I tested these on pavement, ice and snow, and had fab results. I could run with confidence, no change in my gait and no slippage, at all.

The only downsides to these is that — unless your normal running shoes are waterproof — your feet are probably going to get cold and wet. Mine did. But, for a short run, it wasn’t a huge deal — and it is nice to be able to run in your normal shoes and be able to take these cleats on and off as needed without buying any special running-in-the-snow shoes. You know, pros and cons. Different strokes for different running folks!

Overall though, I think both of these options rock. Which one do you think you’d prefer for running in the snow and ice? —Jenn
