Studio Review: Brooklyn Bodyburn and the MegaFormer

A little over a year ago Tracy Carlinsky (a former ballet dancer) decided to take her love of the Lagree Fitness system (which she discovered while living in Los Angeles) and bring it to one of the trendiest neighborhoods in New York City: Williamsburg in Brooklyn. Since then, Brooklyn Bodyburn has become one of the hottest studios in the city with a devoted clientele who are downright worshipful of the studio’s “MegaFormers” and the results they are getting.

What is a MegaFormer, you ask? Good question. The MegaFormer is a piece of fitness equipment that is sort of like a Pilates reformer on steroids. It combines strength training, flexibility and cardio and uses your body weight and balance to perform a series of exercises. You spend the entire class on the MegaFormer doing push-ups, leg lifts, lunges and planks in a series of intervals that last anywhere from 20 seconds to one minute while constantly challenging your core.

Recently, I took a class with expert trainer Keisha Saddler, and it was — quite frankly — the toughest workout I have done in ages. It felt as if I worked every muscle in my body and my core expressed relief when I was done. The motto for Brooklyn Bodyburn is “If it didn’t burn — everyone would do it.” Let me tell you folks: they are NOT kidding about that!

Here is a clip showing the MegaFormer and Brooklyn Bodyburn in action (’cause you have to see it to really get it):

If you are looking for a challenging workout and want to check out “too cool for school” Williamsburg, you need to give Brooklyn Bodyburn a try. There are all types of class packages depending on your time and budget, from $18 for a first time student to a 30-day unlimited option. The studio is located by the waterfront with an amazing view of the New York City skyline. Bonus: so many wonderful restaurants are nearby, so you can eat a great meal after torching all of those calories!

Have you tried the MegaFormer and lived to tell about it? Let me know what you think of it! —Margo
