A Day in the Life of Kerri Walsh Jennings (Plus How to Feel Confident in a Bikini!)

When I say we here at FBG are big Kerri Walsh Jennings fans, I mean it.

First, FBG Kristen is such a big fan that she goes to see her play live (lucky!).

Second, we FLIP OUT when she Tweets us and says stuff like this.

Um, she wants to be a Fit Bottomed Girl! She is sooo an FBG!

And, third, when we get the chance to pick her brain, we take it! Which is exactly what recently happened! Kerri (We can just call her Kerri, right? Here’s hoping!) is the newest addition to ASICS America, a group of elite athletes. The three-time Olympic beach volleyball player is known for her drive, her dedication to the sport and her general awesomeness (and, yes, that butt). Oh, and did we mention she’s had three kids and is also a dedicated mother? Like whoa.

We chatted Kerri up about the new ASICS partnership, along with what a day in the life of Kerri Walsh Jennings looks like and even her top tips for feeling confident in an itty bitty bikini. And, guys, you won’t believe her workout schedule …

Interview With Kerri Walsh Jennings

How did the relationship with ASICS come about? ASICS is taking up a larger space in the volleyball and beach volleyball world, so the connection was very authentic and relevant. My start came on the hard court, and my heart is still very much there. My goal is to help ASICS, in any way I can, to become the clear leader in the volleyball world, and I am thrilled to be playing in my first big ASICS event this summer, the ASICS World Series of Beach Volleyball.

Do you have a favorite ASICS product? Or one you’re really excited to wear? ASICS athlete bikini’s are truly fantastic! The fabric is both luxurious and sporty, meaning that it can withstand the abuse I put my suits through all while feeling very comfortable. I am excited to get to know their entire line of clothing as well as their shoes. So far I’ve loved every piece!

What’s a typical day like for you in terms of workouts and eats? My day is a dead sprint from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Our kids wake up between 5:15 a.m. to 6 a.m. Breakfast is a shake using Designer Whey protein, greens, berries, flax seed, spiralina, etc., or oatmeal with raw almond butter and honey.

We take the kids to school by 8:30 a.m., then it’s off to the races. I practice for two to three hours, grab a quick snack (protein bar), then head to my Pilates, track workout or Fast Twitch (weight-lifting) workout depending on the day. I usually have two to three workouts a day and physical therapy or I meet with my sports psychologist. I try to do all interviews and errands in the time window as well. My goal is to be done with work by the time we grab the boys from school, but that rarely happens. Our days are jam-packed and go so fast, but we love it!

What sport/fitness activity would you be into if you weren’t playing volleyball? Pilates FOR SURE! I love lifting weights. I’d likely be playing another sport competitively (I came wired that way), and basketball was my second favorite. I’m glad I don’t have to think about that just yet. 😉 A bucket list item of mine is to play on a family co-ed softball team … one day!

What are some of your top tips on how to be confident in a bikini? First thing is to find one that fits — fit is everything! I’m also a big believer in a smaller bikini bottom. I think small works well with ladies who are a little more endowed and for those who aren’t. Not too small, mind you, but smaller. 😉 Get an organic spray tan or use some Skin Authority self tanner (my favorite) and this will help a ton! A tan makes everything better!

What are some of your favorite things to do at the beach when you don’t have a net? Read, nap, play with my babes, throw a ball around. I aspire to learn how to stand-up paddle. I need to let go of my fear of sharks first though.

What do you listen to before warming up? We noticed that you usually have earphones in leading up to all of your matches. I listen to a ton of Sade. She helps me to cool my jets and stay cool and collected. I run pretty high in general, so I’m not looking to be too amped up before a match. That comes naturally!

Talk about a full day! Kerri, you’re our shero! Think you could keep up with Kerri? Don a smaller bikini bottom? —Jenn
