Headphone Review: Putting 4 New Pairs to the Test

BlueAnt Pump Wireless HD Sportbuds

I’m cursed with a small head. Which also means I have small ears. Which also means that when I go to wear any headband or a pair of earbuds things are usually, well, challenging. So reviewing new earbuds is one of those things I kind of approach with caution. While it could be a divine intervention from the earbud gods, it could also be a colossal failure of a workout — if you’ve ever struggled with earbud fit, you know it can darn near ruin a run. I’m happy to say that trying the BlueAnt Pump Wirless HD Sportbuds was somewhere there in the middle.

Setting them up was SUPER, almost ridiculously easy. There’s no software, and the directions are simple. Charge them with a USB cord for a couple hours, synch the Bluetooth with your device, and you’re ready to pump the jams wirelessly for up to eight hours. Right there on the sportbuds is a button to control the volume and play/pause as necessary. (I do wish there was a skip button, but it’s not a huge thing.) And the sound of these is GREAT. Plus, they’re waterproof. You can’t jump in the pool or anything with them, but you can go out for a run in the rain or get really, really sweaty without worrying about them, which rocks.

Now, let’s discuss fit. These come with large, medium and small custom seal tips. I went with small, and they felt pretty good. For some reason my right ear was always a bit uncomfortable — but I blame that more on my freakish ears than anything else. Wearing these alone, they jostled a bit, but BlueAnt also throws in “stabilizers,” these little extra pieces that help the earbuds to stay put in your earholes, that really do work! At first, I thought the whole over-the-ear design wouldn’t work because I simply didn’t have enough ear to fill it, but once these stabilizers were in, I had no issues.

For $105, these earbuds are an investment and although set-up is easy, finding your perfect fit may take a few tries and maybe even a few annoying runs (took me three runs to finally get it right). That said, once you have your fit, you have earbuds that sound great, pump up the jams, aren’t bothered by water and sweat, and don’t have any wires to get in your way. Totes worth it in my book. —Jenn

You can skip tracks with Pump:
How do I skip forward tracks? press and hold vol + for 2 seconds per track you want to skip. Keep holding it to keep skipping.

How do I skip backward a track? press and hold vol – for 2 seconds per track you want to skip. Keep holding it to keep skipping.
