5 Fitness Toys to Try in Your Next Workout

There’s nothing like new fitness toys to get you excited about a workout. And whether you try these at your gym or buy them to use at home, we are sooo digging these. They feel almost as much like play as like a workout. Well, almost. Because they all certainly still deliver quite the workout, especially a functional one. Sneaky fitness toys for the win!

5 New Fitness Toys to Play With — and Get Fit With!

1. Sandbags. I had a chance to play around with a couple of different sized sandbags this summer, and I was thrilled with the way I could incorporate moves I knew from my kettlebell workouts but in new and, in some cases, more challenging ways. You can use a lighter weight along with some full-body moves to get in your cardio, or grab a heavier sandbag to do some serious lifting.

2. Battle ropes. We’ve reviewed some battle ropes before, and, man, oh, man, are they fun! Battle or combat ropes burn the heck out of your upper body and get your heart rate sky high fast, but it’s pretty much impossible to use them and not feel like a butt-kicking bad-ass. At least for the first minute or two. (And, then, it’s like: Holy COW my entire body is on fire!)

3. Atlas stones. My gym has had these for about a year now, and, they are no joke. Repeat: no joke. Typically made from concrete via a mold, Atlas stones are big in the CrossFit world and are not for the faint of heart. Use one, and you do actually kind of feel like Atlas. Just make sure you try it with a coach or trainer first so you know what the heck you’re doing!

4. Rebounder. It’s pretty much impossible to bounce on a mini-trampoline and have it not feel like fun. No matter which rebounder you choose (we like this one and this one), get your bounce on and your next workout will feel like play! (And get started with this fun trampoline workout!)

5. Resistance bands. These resistance bands (disclosure: we’re an affiliate!) are great for almost anything. You can use it for strength work or stretching — even to up the workout ante on your yoga routine. Plus, they’re small enough to stash in your bag, so if your gym doesn’t offer them, you can tote your own around with you.
