Ready-Made Workout Playlists: Music Apps You’ll Love

rockmyrun

3. Rock My Run

So, RockMyRun is different in some pretty rad ways. Instead of finding a genre or type of music and just letting it play, you actually select a specific playlist of a finite length mixed by a professional DJ. But, like the above, it is available on the web (where you can download your chosen mix to use later) or as an app on your phone.

To find the right playlist for your run, you can narrow your search by genre, length of playlist, lyrics (explicit or no) and — most importantly for running — BPM. There are mixes designed for tempo runs, intervals and all different distances of races. But, perhaps the coolest thing is RockMyRun’s signature MyBeat option, which allows you to either set a mix to modify its beat to match your steps or, if you’re looking for a spot-on metronome, you can set any mix to a specific BPM (like 175 or 180 for optimal cadence). I can’t even tell you how cool I think this option is.

Pros: Well, MyBeat, obviously. Also, the professional DJ mixes are really well done and interesting. You can see what tracks are included in most mixes if you want, but I usually just look at the first few to make sure I’ll like it and allow myself to be surprised from there on out.

Cons: The options for playlists are more limited than with the other apps mentioned (although I’ve found a few that I really like) and, because of the mixes it’s really not customizable.

Cost: The basic service is free, but the basic service doesn’t give you access to a lot of mixes (or any of the longer ones), it doesn’t have MyBeat available, and you can only download one standard mix (less than 45 minutes) per month from the website vs. three premium (over 45 minutes) per month. Premium Membership is $4.99/month, $12.99/quarter or $35.99/year (equivalent to $2.99/month).

What music apps do you rely on for new tunes? Do you go to different sources for your workout tunes? —Kristen
