The One Thing I’m Thinking About More on My Runs These Days

I’ve always known that safety was important when running. I mean, the horror stories of runners being hit by cars are pretty terrifying, and I’ve always been one to be aware of my surroundings. But now that when I go out for a run it’s not just me — there are two of us — my awareness of my, er, our personal safety is way heightened. I’m lucky enough that I can pop out for a run during the middle of the work day most of the time, but on the rare occasion I’m out walking the dog or going for a jog at dusk or dark, making sure that I’m seen is a high priority. And luckily enough, Brooks Running recently sent me a few new pieces that help with just that for National Running Safety Month (per our relationship with them as a blog ambassador!) — plus, they also cover my bump pretty well. Bonus!

And let’s talk about that bump for a minute. Like, whoa.

I’m 26 weeks here … almost out of the second trimester!

I’ve mentioned before that I’m running less and less as the months tick by, as the wee one likes to hang out on my bladder. But, I’m still able to now run a mile or so pretty often and have it feel good. And since the temperature has dropped, getting dressed for an outdoor run — let alone one at night — is getting tricky. This is where the Nightlife LS ($80) has been a godsend. Although it’s not designed as a maternity shirt, it’s nice and long, and when I sized up from a medium to a large, it’s stretched to cover my bump perfectly and still has length to it. It has all kinds of reflective accents on it at key points so that as you run and move drivers recognize you as, you know, a human and not a deer or a traffic sign. It’s pretty rad. Plus it’s soft, comfy and … THUMB HOLES!

For my outdoor runs, I’ve lately been wearing that top with the Utopia Thermal Tight II (also sized up and with lots of reflective details) and PureFlow 3 in the amazing Nightlife pink color ($100). Check. It.

Because everything gets bigger when you’re pregnant, I’ve also gone up a half size in the shoe department. And these PureProject shoes feel sooo good on. Light and easy to walk around in (Dear lord, I am SO clumsy lately that I need all the help I can get), these are great for my short runs, darn near glow in the dark and — even though they are running shoes — I like them for cross-training at the gym, too, so right now I’m getting double-duty out of them.

So, yeah, we’re totally covered and safe this fall and winter. Thank you, Brooks! How are you making sure you’re safe and seen at night? —Jenn
