Does Practice Make Perfect? How I Became a Runner

We are thrilled to have guest blogger, Brynn Guster, certified holistic health coach and healthy lifestyle blogger, figure skater and mom-to-be, shares her story and tips on how she became a runner. Although she shares health tips and general views of life, Brynn believes in bio-individuality and the idea that different foods, fitness and lifestyle choices work for different people. Working with people to find their balance in life is what keeps her ticking!

Have you ever tried to go on a run only to find yourself winded, tired, sore and basically fed-up? Next thing you know statements like “I hate running” are coming out of your mouth? Well sure, anyone would hate running after that experience. But, what if you were to give yourself more of a shot at success before you even walk out the front door and turn on your iPod?

We all know the saying, “practice makes perfect,” right? Basically, the sentiment that the more effort, focus, energy and desire we put into something, the more that will come back to us eventually. But what if we have been trying our best and yet are not moving forward?

We all have weak spots, hello, we’re all human. Being able to accept these spots, some constructive criticism and then be open to help is where we find our ability to move forward and push through the roadblock.

While I am athletic, I am not a runner by nature. I had to work at running, train myself, be patient and be willing to suck at it. Seriously. Now, after several 5ks, 10ks and even a half marathon, I consider myself a runner. How did I get there? Here is what I did to move past my roadblocks and become a runner!

How I Became a Runner — and You Can, Too!

Get a starting point. Go out and try a run without any ego. Just go. Find your comfort point, a place where you can hold onto the pace for a few minutes without being completely winded. Who cares if a turtle is passing you. That is them, this is you.

Give yourself a pat on the back. You did it! You ran and that is something! I truly believe in throwing yourself a party for moments like these. Do not undersell any moment or hurdle no matter the size.

Set a goal. Now that you have a starting point, decide what it is you want out of this. Do you want to be faster? Go farther? Lose weight? You can find a ton of great training programs online that are created for different goals. I personally love Hal Higdon because you can customize the program to your abilities.

Keep at it. Does practice make perfect? No. But it does make you better mentally, physically and ,yup, it helps with the ego, too. Don’t give up if you have a bad run or can’t meet the distance you set for yourself. There is always tomorrow.

Be a student and keep working towards your goals. Realize that although you may have missed your planned goal, you may have learned something even more valuable in the mean time. Did you realize that a certain food worked well or gave you a cramp? Did you start out too fast? Try and think about your run from an objective perspective and get all that you can out of the run — even if it wasn’t your best.

Thank you to FBG for the opportunity to guest post! I would love to hear from you. Find me on my blog, BalancingB, Instagram, Pinterest, or Twitter for my daily workouts, intuitive eating and more on Health Coaching.

I am a woman who has been running for 43 years, cycling for even longer and participating in triathlons (road and mountain bike) for 33 years.
I have run across the Grand Canyon twice in less than five hrs. and did a Rim to rim to rim in 12 and a half. I completed my 122nd triathlon this past summer and won my age group this year at the Sharkfest swim from Alcatraz this year (my 9th).

I don’t call myself a “runner, swimmer, mtn. biker or cyclist or triathlete. I don’t need a label other than my name, “mom” or sometime “hon” from my spouse. I don’t get why people need the “ER” when they are just doing something….
