Foam-Rolling 101: How to Use a Foam Roller


Do you know what one of my FAVORITE tools is? The foam roller. It has seriously been my BFF and savior during all of my workouts, but especially was during my marathon training.

And the best part is that although the foam roller seems a little weird to the first-timer, it’s super simple to use — and there’s about a million reasons why you should roll regularly. So check out the below video that has tips on how to use your foam roller, plus three great foam-rolling exercises!

  1. I *love* the foam roller — my trainer got me into them a few years ago due to lower back pain while I was finishing up my doctoral thesis. It has since become part of my regular workout regime and also something I’ll do “around the house” when I feel tightness.

    The first few times I used the roller on my lower back, I described the relief the roller brings as a “nuclear bomb of muscular relief” going off. :)

    In fact, I’m taking my roller to NY this weekend to roll my back over the turkey-day weekend holiday with the family!
