Get Ready to #MakeYourMove

Resolutions at the start of the year are great — I actually love making them, personally, as long as I have a good “why” behind ’em — but I also love the idea of spring as a time of renewal. That visible change of seasons, with longer days and warmer sunbeams, just seems to awaken a little something in us, you know? I find it a little easier to reset my focus on my health- and fitness-related goals in a season when I’m able to set the dinner table before the sun sets.

That’s what makes the timing of our participating in Kohl’s #MakeYourMove program so completely perfect. You know how we’re always saying you can’t hate yourself healthy, and that in order to make healthy living a real part of your life, you have to find things you love (and know that you deserve all those things)? #MakeYourMove is right on target with that. It’s about saying yes to things that make you feel amazing and alive and inspired, embracing opportunity, leading a life that brings you joy, and, basically, living in a way that’s not only good for your health, but that feels good and easy and fun.

Kristen in moving boxes

Think I’m taking the #MakeYourMove program too literally with all these moving boxes? It’ll all make sense in just a second, I promise.

For you, that might mean rediscovering a love of cooking with fresh, natural, delicious ingredients, or finally trying that class at your gym that looks like so much fun but you’ve been putting it off because … well, why? It doesn’t really matter, because you don’t have to keep putting it off — you can make it your new favorite class right now! (Or, I mean, whenever the next class is. You know.)

For me, it #MakeYourMove is about continuing (and strengthening) my focus on self-care. I’ve got a few stressful things going on (selling and buying a home, moving to a new city, dealing with a shoulder injury that’s keeping me out of my beloved pool), and I don’t want to let the stuff I’m finding a bit challenging overshadow what’s awesome (a new adventure, a chance to join a whole new fitness community, the fact that I have a job and life I truly love).

So, my self-care is coming in a few forms. While  I’m not planning another really big triathlon in the near future, running, biking and overall fitness certainly continue to be a part of how I keep myself healthy, but I’m putting more of a focus on things that will keep my mind feeling great, so sleep and meditation are major players, and I picked up a few things at Kohl’s to help me out.

They’ve got these fab candles by Sonoma — each has a scent designed to evoke a feeling or state, so I opted for a few to help me with meditation and relaxing in the evening (Be Tranquil, Be Relaxed, and Be Soothed). Plus? I liked the packaging. It’s so clean and pretty!

I also decided it was time to take my sleep game to the next level with some grown-up pillows — the one I’ve been using for the past couple of years was great at first, but has been super flat and hard in the middle for … a while now. I’m thinking these king-size Beautyrest Never Flat Extra Firm pillows should totally do the trick, both for me and for my husband. Because, let’s be real — if your partner isn’t sleeping well, you’re not, either.

I’m setting a goal to meditate at least five times a week, even if it’s just for a short time, but — here’s where it’s tricky for me — I want to make a point to do it somewhere other than my office. And, I’m going to aim to be in bed with the TV (and my phone!) off by 11 p.m. each night. If I’m still not sleepy and want to read a book, fine — I’ve been reading Anna Karenina for ages and it’s helped me fall asleep on plenty of fidgety nights — but I don’t want those electronics to keep me awake any longer than necessary.

Jenn and Erin will be joining me later this spring and summer to dish on their involvement in the #MakeYourMove program, so you’ll have a chance to check out all of our goals, hear about our strategies and see what kind of cool goodies we’re picking up in order to facilitate those plans.

In the meantime, let’s hear your thoughts on how you’re going to #MakeYourMove. Will you focus on fitness? Mindfulness and stress reduction? Healthy eating? Something else entirely? Go ahead — there are no wrong answers here. And if you need a little inspiration, feel free to follow Kohl’s on social (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest) using #MakeYourMove — they’ll be sharing all kinds of cool ideas! Kristen
