When I was growing up, I lived in the pool in the summers. The smell of chlorine, the fatigue of a day in the water and my grandma’s recovery milkshakes bring back such fond memories of childhood for me. The outdoor pool is half the reason I work our fancy gym membership into our budget: I want my kids to have those same sunny memories.
While I love the sun and the summer — with loads of SPF, of course — my husband is a more reluctant pool-goer. It stems from a legitimate case of sun allergy from an occasion when he had sun poisoning as a kid. I’ve witnessed the unfortunate effects when he’s gotten too much sun exposure on vacations; he gets an unbearable itch that will keep him (and therefore me) up all night long. Now that the outdoor pool is open and it’s warm enough to take advantage of it, I knew just what to do for this segment of Kohl’s Make Your Move campaign: Gear up with protective swim clothing.
I knew that a swim shirt would make the difference between my husband being paranoid about sunburn and him being able to actually enjoy the pool with the kids, so I headed to Kohl’s to stock up on swim gear. I got him a couple of SPF 50 swim shirts, along with a new pair of trunks because I think the ones he had were the ones he wore on our honeymoon nearly 10 years ago. I couldn’t resist getting myself something from the swimwear section, too, particularly since my last suit was a maternity one and I needed something new.
As a mom who is lugging three kids and all of our supplies to the pool, and who often has a grabby baby on the hip and other little ones who like to hang on me, I knew I wanted some swim shorts and a sturdy top this time around. Not only is there more coverage — yay for less sunscreen — but I don’t have to worry about the top falling off, or the shorts riding up or getting pulled down; I can play without worrying about anything falling out. The top I got is sporty and I love the gray/yellow combo!
Everything my husband owns is in a shade of gray, so I had fun buying something with bright orange sleeves that make him easy to spot at a crowded pool.
The kiddos didn’t get left out of the mix either. My son needed some shoes to throw on for the pool, so of course these shark ones fit the bill.
We had so much fun at the pool. My oldest got to show off all she learned with her swim classes with me in the deep end. My son loved splashing in the shallow end. And the baby got to do a little splashing in the pool for the first time, too. I love how my suit fits and the no-wedge nature of the shorts — particularly because at one point I was carrying both the 20-pound baby AND my 3-year-old.
Needless to say, we all made our move so hard there was some fatigue on the way home.
Our day was a success, and I’m so looking forward to a long summer with plenty of pool time!
