Overcoming My Derailers

You know what’s full of surprises? Life. And you know what we call these surprises that attempt to get in the way of our active and fit lives? Derailers. Here’s a (hilarious) video to help illustrate the point.

Funny, huh? And seriously, how many times has something similar happened to you? Derailers are everywhere … everywhere! Which is exactly why it’s important to be prepared for them. Take for example my seemingly normal drive to take my daughter to daycare.

My Derailer Experience

When we left the house it was sunny. Gwen was happy. I wasn’t hungry. And I had plans to hurry home after kiddo drop-off and write all the posts and do all the things, including some much needed yoga. And then we got in the car and 15 minutes later this happened.

Gwen (clearly) wasn’t happy. A thunderstorm was a brewin’ outside. I went from not hungry to HANGRY. And we were stuck in traffic, making our usual trip to daycare take twice as long as normal. Basically, no one had patience: not Gwen, not me, not the weather and certainly not the other drivers on the road. And while my situation wasn’t quite as bad as the video above, it’s clear: this wasn’t just an annoyance. This was a derailer.

After finally getting Gwen to daycare, all I really wanted to do was to roll up to a coffee shop, order a whole lot of sugary caffeinated goodness and go home and take a nap.
