Weighing In: A Love-Hate Relationship with the Scale

scale, eatsmart digital bathroomThe scale can be a scary, mean little monster, which is why here at FBG we moderate their use and don’t let them rule our world. You think stepping on the scale during that time of the month or after a few extra treats is bad? Ha! I laugh at that fear. Beware a moody scale! I swear, the fella and I had about had a cow uncovering the EatSmart Digital Bathroom Scale’s inconsistencies. One minute he’d be one weight. Then he’d step back on and gain 10 pounds. The scale also seemed to weigh me an additional 5 pounds heavier than usual. Maybe I was having a bad day…or maybe the scale was under the weather?

Although the scale gave me attitude, that doesn’t stop me from adoring its prettiness. I currently keep it in the main bathroom and when guests come over I always hear an “Oooh!” from behind the door. I hate to knock the scale completely, so I make sure to tell folks that while mine may be off on occasion, everyone else seems to love their scales. The reviews on Amazon are pretty convincing. We’ve actually reviewed other EatSmart products and been pleased. Heck, Jenn even named her scale!

The lesson in all of this? If you’re gonna use the scale as a tool, make sure that you use it correctly. Be sure to read the instructions, calibrating it if necessary, and always weigh yourself on a hard flat surface. And probably the best advice of all: Never let the number on the scale determine your worth! Also check out our poll on weighing in to share your thoughts on stepping (or not stepping) on the scale! —Tish

This is why I will never own a scale at home. I know that it would drive me MENTAL! I am a Weight Watchers member, so I use their scale that’s calibrated, and I weigh once a week. That can get me neurotic enough, so I know that if I had the ability to weigh daily, it would be a disaster.

We went with Eatsmart’s Precision Plus Digital Bathroom Scale and it is AWESOME!! It is SO well calibrated and accurate, even at high weights (it weighs up to 440 pounds).

I’ve never had any problems with the scale being off 10 lbs, but my EatSmart scale can be pretty inconsistent.

I going cold turkey this week. I’m sick of the emotional roller coaster… so we’ll see if I can readjust to a once-a-week weigh in!

  5. Christine R says:

It used to be that I dreaded getting on the scale. Now I eat right and check 2 days in a row, once a week, to make sure that I am keeping my weight where I worked so hard to get it. I have had it creep up on me once before, and I don’t want that to happen again.
That being said, between food, hydration status, and other factors, my weight can vary from time to time, but when I watch it regularly I am looking at the trend, not the weight that date.

Do I think everyone should weigh themselves regularly… NO, just if it works for you.

I was an obsessive, neurotic weight checker and would stand in the scale morning and night. It ruined my life and it would turn even the brightest of days grey. Then the battery died and I decided not to replace it… It has been nothing but freedom.
