Review: Unleash the Power of the Female Brain (With Giveaway!)

The female brain is an amazingly awesome thing. And being healthy helps EVERYTHING.

The female brain is an amazingly awesome thing. And being healthy helps EVERYTHING.

When I first got Unleash the Power of the Female Brain here at FBG HQ, my first thought was: “Female brain. Why does it have to be a female brain?” Then I saw that the book was written by a dude, and the feminist in me got all fired up. But, after sitting down and actually, you know, reading it, I learned that — in fact — men and women do have different brains. And that that’s actually kind of awesome and extremely interesting. Like they say, don’t judge a book by its cover. Or, in this case, its author or title.

Dr. Daniel Amen writes one heck of a book. Similar to this recently reviewed bookUnleash the Power of the Female Brain is all about the stuff between your ears. But instead of the book being just about using your brain to help you lose weight, this book focuses more on overall well-being. From, as the sub-title says, better health, energy, mood, focus and sex (yep!), it promises a lot, but it also delivers a lot.

Each chapter focuses on different ways to boost your brain power and health. From understanding why the female brain is different (spoiler: it has to do with hormones!) to how to properly feed, soothe and even control the brain, it’s a pretty heady read (Get it? Har har!) that’s really interesting if you’re okay with diving into the science side of things. At the end of every chapter, there’s even an hour-long exercise to help you do everything from learn from your self-perceived mistakes to make your kitchen healthier to make your worries work for you.

I liked that this book covered the gamut of wellness issues for females: fertility, pregnancy, menopause, weight, stress, anxiety, insomnia and relationships. But what I loved about it was that it’s really about helping you to recognize how taking care of and treating your brain as important as your heart is super important. The brain is an essential part of who we are, yet so often we do things that don’t support brain health (like drinking too much, having repetitive negative thoughts and skimping on sleep). Yes, it’s a dense read with A LOT of science and big multi-syllable words, but just a couple chapters in and I guarantee you’ll start taking your brain into consideration more and making better decisions to help support it.
