Join Us for the FBG Unplug Challenge!

Last summer, I took a semi-last-minute vacation to Canada and, for the first time in a long time, the importance of unplugging really hit me. Reaching for my phone, checking in on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, emails and text messages (plus, you know, the occasional phone call or voice mail) is such an automatic response. It’s not even like I — or most people I know, to be honest — only reach for it when bored or when expecting something. We just … reach for our phones or open up or laptops or pull out our tablets all. the. time.

And guys? It’s not good for us.

Now listen. I’m not about to tell you that you need to leave your phone behind constantly or that you should skip the social media. I’m a big fan of all those things, and I don’t intend to stop using it. But, over the last few months, I have made more of an effort to be present, which includes occasionally putting my phone (and tablet, and laptop, and TV remote) down. Not just down on the table, but down. Away. Out of reach.

Basically, I find that, when I take even an hour or so to truly unplug, I feel the difference. But even knowing that’s the case, I have to force myself to do it each and every time. I’m betting some of you are in the same boat.

So, to try to help all of us out a bit, we at Fit Bottomed Girls are putting out a challenge to you: The FBG Unplug Challenge. There are several levels — you’ll see the deets below — but the bottom line is that we’re asking you to commit to some level of unplugging at some point over the next few weeks. It can be as little as an hour one day, or you can give it a full day if you want. Heck, you can even make it a daily or weekly practice — that would be awesome!

And how you unplug is totally up to you. Ideally, of course, you’d eschew all electronics, but the bottom line is, we want you to experience a difference, even if it’s for a short time. If you can devote a few hours to yoga and meditation, or go for a hike, or simply play with your kids or pets or friends, do it. If unplugging means something else to you entirely, though, far be it from us to stand in your way.

Jenn, Erin, Tish and I will be sharing a bit about our unplugging experiences over the coming month, and we’d love to hear your stories, too! Hit us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or just as a comment on one of our posts (See? Told you I wasn’t going to tell you to stay away from social media! But, you know, do wait until you’ve completed your challenge to log on …) and use the hashtag #FBGUnplug to share ways you’re unplugging, tips you’d like to share, what you’ve learned or how you’ve benefited from a little time away from the screen … you get the idea.

Now tell me: Who’s in for this unplugging challenge? —Kristen
