The Fit Bottomed Girls are a team originally made up of Jennipher Walters and Erin Whitehead. While the pair is sometimes so twin-like it’s scary, they both bring different perspectives to the FBG table. Due to the site’s increasing popularity, Jenn and Erin have expanded the FBG team to include a new partner (FBG Kristen!) and various contributing writers, bringing new content and other fun, fresh perspectives to the site. The FBGs pride themselves on being real girls — not gladiators. They understand that health and fitness should be about enjoyable activities and the occasional treat, not about torturous workouts and deprivation.
A Little About the FBGs
Jennipher Walters: As co-founder of the site and co-author of The Fit Bottomed Girls Anti-Diet, Jenn has several fitness credentials under her belt: She is an ACE-certified personal trainer, health coach, and advanced health and fitness specialist, and an AFAA-certified group exercise instructor. Jenn has a journalism degree from the University of Missouri and an MA in health journalism from the University of Minnesota. She has also written for numerous online publications including Shape magazine, The Huffington Post, SparkPeople and Diets in Review. In her free time, Jenn can be found challenging her husband to a wicked game of MarioKart on the Wii, chomping on kale, updating her 1960s-decorated home in Kansas City, Mo., doing CrossFit and running with her pup.
Erin Whitehead: Erin, co-founder and co-author of The Fit Bottomed Girls Anti-Diet, is an ACE-certified personal trainer with years of workout experience under her belt. Erin has a journalism degree from the University of Kansas and is a bit of a word nerd. Born and raised in Topeka, Kan., Erin has settled in New Jersey after living — and loving — time spent in Lawrence, Kan., and Menlo Park, Calif. When not working out, Erin can be found hanging with her husband and three kids. Her fave pastimes include reading and devouring entire seasons of TV shows in just days via Netflix. Be sure to read about all of Erin’s motherhood and fitness adventures on Fit Bottomed Mamas!
Kristen Seymour: Kristen Seymour is the third partner at Fit Bottomed Girls and holds the position of Editor-in-Chief at Fit Bottomed Eats. She’s an enthusiastic (if not particularly speedy) triathlete, enormous animal lover, and passionate pescatarian foodie (with a special love of Mexican food and roasted veggies). She relies on her dogs to get her outside when she’s feeling lazy, and counts on Twitter (and her fellow FBGs) to motivate her to hit the gym — works like a charm every time. Kristen makes time for yoga — at least a little bit — almost every day and is slowly but steadily making meditation a regular practice, even on (well, especially on) the days when all she can think about is how she can’t possibly make time to just sit and be. She’s a graduate of the University of Florida (Go Gators!), and she and her husband live, swim, bike and run in the Sunshine State with their two mutts and a mercurial cat.
Tish Arana: Tish started out as a guest writer for FBG in July 2009 and quickly caught the fitness writing bug, becoming a part of the FBG team. Not only did the FBGs give her the oomph she needed to make her health and fitness a priority (she’s gone from couch potato to marathoner!), they also got her to finally use her journalism degree from the University of Kansas. She currently lives in the Los Angeles area, covering all things West Coast fitness. She also writes regularly on her own blog, Luv and Kiwi.
Kelsey Brazelton: Kelsey joined the FBG team in August 2011 as the site’s first intern and transitioned to contributing writer in December 2012. She is a self-proclaimed on-again off-again exerciser—usually running. She earned her journalism degree at Northwest Missouri State University. Kelsey has worked in the journalism field for a variety of magazines—including fitness and hopes to bring new newbie insight to the site as she tries everything from Pilates DVDs to P90X2.
Margo Donohue: Margo is the creator of the blog, Brooklyn Fit Chick, which has been noted for its lively tone and unique take on fitness and a healthy lifestyle by top media including Shape and Fitness magazine, and MSN’s FitBie.com. Margo is an AFAA-certified group fitness instructor who teaches several classes per week and has private clientele as a NASM-certified personal trainer in her favorite place in the world—Brooklyn, New York. She earned her degree in speech-communications in 1994 from San Jose State University.
Susan Manville: Susan Manville has finished everything from 5ks to Ironman, but swears yoga is the most difficult thing she’s ever done—balance is, like, hard. When she isn’t training, she can be found behind her purple MacBook, trying to string words into coherent sentences for Fit Bottomed Girls, Competitor Magazine, Triathlete.com, and No Meat Athlete. Susan likes dogs more than babies and has been known to attend races in a Wonder Woman swimsuit. Follow her on Twitter, @SusanLacke, but don’t ask what she’d do for a Klondike Bar. That’s a loaded question.
Erika Morgan: Erika has been with FBG as of April 2014 as an intern and now as a contributor! She is a student at UMKC studying communications with an emphasis on journalism and mass media. She has one year left in her undergraduate program, then plans to go on and receive her Masters in Advertising and Marketing. She enjoys writing more than anything, but after losing 30 pounds a few years ago, she really became passionate about health and fitness. FBG seemed to be a perfect fit for her in order to combine her two passions. She really enjoys the outdoors (minus the bugs), cooking and eating, playing the piano, and she has a minor online-shopping addiction. And she’s also a little pet crazy with three dogs and a 20-pound cat!
Jennifer Schlozman: Jenny is a former Weight Watchers Leader Ambassador, who lost 40 pounds pre-baby and 82 pounds post baby. A runner, triathlete and half-marathoner, she finds comfort in group workouts and loves finding new fit friends. Born and raised in the North suburbs of Chicago but now living in the Kansas City area, Jenny loves long walks in the sun, homemade meals, manicures, the sound of her husband’s voice and slow dancing with her little mister.
Gail Gedan Spencer: Gail writes about healthy living at her blog GoGoGail.com and around the web. She chases lizards down the sidewalk in her South Florida neighborhood and is often buried in an avalanche of diet books and workout DVDs. Gail, who is an NASM-certified Weight Loss Specialist, is a former newspaper copy editor and content editor and has worked at papers coast to coast, including the Orange County Register, USA Today and the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. She’s a wife, mom to a hungry teenager and really and truly loves green smoothies.
Karen Timper: With exercise experience spanning three decades, Karen’s desire to maintain a healthy lifestyle has stayed constant over the years. A true fitness enthusiast, she estimates she’s completed more than 5,000 workouts, but remains eager to check out the latest fitness craze and never misses an opportunity to improve herself. Coupled with her degree in Hospitality Management from the American Culinary Federation Chefs Apprenticeship Program, Karen lends her real life experience to both FBG and Fit Bottomed Eats. These days she can usually be found in her kitchen taste testing recipes or at the gym working off her latest creation.
Ali B. Zagat: Ali struggled with childhood asthma and never considered herself particularly athletic … until martial arts changed her mind and improved her health. She now has a brown belt in Krav Maga and is happiest when tackling a new fitness challenge, hiking with her husband or kayaking with her family. A Philadelphia-based writer and editor, Ali also trains in Muay Thai, practices yoga and has recently discovered the wonders of kettlebells. When she isn’t working out or wrangling a particularly recalcitrant sentence, Ali loves to cook, and believes that a healthy diet has room for both kale and dark chocolate truffles.
Currently, FBG is not looking to expand its team. If this changes, we’ll be sure to let you know!
