It’s interesting that so many celebrities are coming out with workout DVDs these days. It’s kind of like getting an inside peek on exactly how they get—and stay—so fit. Granted, they have more hours of the day to dedicate to looking good because their day jobs depend on it, but it’s fun nonetheless. Plus, since they’re not playing a role in the DVD, you get a peek at what they’re “really” like. Well, except for our first DVD review that features a reality TV star…

Regardless, today’s workout DVD head-to-head pits Real Housewife Bethenny Frankel up against “Mona Lisa Vito” Marisa Tomei to see who wins the title of Best Celebrity Workout DVD. Game on, ladies!

Body by Bethenny

I could never really get into The Real Housewives of New York, but the Orange County version has long been a guilty pleasure, and I’d be lying if I said I hadn’t caught a couple of episodes from New Jersey, bizarro as they may be (that Danielle sure does have the crazy eyes). Despite this, I know who Bethenny Frankel is, and I’m familiar with her SkinnyGirl books and outlook on fitness, so I was curious to try her new workout DVD, Body by Bethenny.

First off, let me say that the DVD set was one of the coolest I’ve seen for a workout DVD. Very posh, yet flowy and open. It was like the giant living room you’ve always wanted to do yoga and drink Mai tais in (not at the same time, of course). Thankfully in the DVD, you get a 40-minute yoga session to fulfill that need. You have to do the drinks on your own.

The yoga session is good for 40 minutes of beginner’s yoga—sun salutations, warrior poses, tree pose, nothing crazy. Well, except Bethenny, but I’m getting ahead of myself. The DVD also features a 10-minute sculpting segment that is a solid and quick upper-body workout for beginners, and a 5-minute Booty Bonus session that consists of a few moves that you can do anywhere.

Certified personal trainer and yogi Kristin McGee does much of the instructing, and she does a pretty good job of cuing the moves and explaining proper form, even when Ms. Frankel chimes in with rather, ahem, interesting remarks. “Boobs to thigh” comes to mind. As does, “I can touch easier than you because of my boobs,” and maybe my personal favorite “You don’t have boobs like me.” See a theme?

Nothing is overly intense in any of the segments, and if you’ve been working out regularly for a few months, you probably won’t break much of a sweat. Beginners though? It’s good stuff. And all boobie snarkiness aside, I really did like the yoga.

Best for: Bethenny Frankel fans who are just starting out on their workout journeys! (Note: If she annoys you at all, I highly recommend forgoing this purchase. Trust me.)

I have loved Marisa Tomei ever since My Cousin Vinny. ”Oh yeah, you blend.” Seriously a classic. And, over the years, Ms. Tomei has always seemed kinda tall and graceful to me—flexible yet goofy and normal. A little hippity-dippity, sure, but there’s wrong with that. When we were told that she had a workout DVD— Marisa Tomei: Core & Curves—coming out, the FBGs’ collective ears perked up. And we were not disappointed.

The DVD pairs Marisa with her fitness trainer, Key Son, for an entire 60-minutes of working out, broken down into Body Definition (20 minutes), Best Legs Workout (15 minutes), and Quick 10 (10 minutes). It looks like it was shot in an older urban yoga studio (just a guess), and the lighting is soft and warm, so it’s kinda relaxing and refreshing right from the get-go. Before each segment Marisa runs you through a quick warm-up on her own and takes you through a few stretches for a cool down after the workout.

The moves in all of the workouts aren’t ground-breaking but they’re definitely unique and very focused. There’s some trotting involved in parts (yes, trotting), skipping and baby lunges. The DVD comes with a small green toning band that you put around your ankles to make all of the moves more challenging and give them some resistance. Overall, it’s like a mix of Pilates and highly targeted, physical therapy-type moves (although maybe that’s just because I’ve been doing some of Key Son’s lateral walks with resistance for my running injury rehab). All of the workouts and moves get you to feel the burn some, but like Body By Bethenny, you won’t get your heart rate too high or get sweaty (for me, a good workout equals a little bit of sweat). However, at the end of the Body Definition section you will be AMAZED at what Marisa’s abs can do. She’s like the Energizer Bunny!

What I probably like most about the DVD though is its good instruction by Key Son, plus helpful yet non-interfering comments from Marisa. It’s almost like you are working out with a trainer and a good friend. Marisa wears a pair of regular-looking shorts (like cut-off sweat pants), a normal tank-top and her hair is a bit of a mess. WHICH IS SO REFRESHING! After all, you’re working out, not in a beauty pageant. So, obviously, big points there for me.

There are sooo many yoga DVDs on the market these days! Here are three recently released yoga titles. Whether you want a killer workout (ahem: Jillian), no hippity-dippity stuff or a relaxed time on the mat, we think that you’ll find something that you love below!

Jillian Michaels: Yoga Meltdown

When I first heard that Jillian Michaels was coming out with a yoga DVD I was a little confused. After all, isn’t yoga Bob’s thing? But all of her other workouts are so darn good that my curiosity was definitely was piqued. Plus, we got A LOT of Twitter requests to review it. So we did! And what did we think, you ask? We likey. We likey a lot.

This DVD has Level 1 and Level 2 workouts on it. The first one is about 34 minutes long, and the second one is just shy of 30 minutes. With no frills or sanskrit (perfect for ya’ll who get freaked by chanting or om-ing in yoga), Jillian delivers one heck of a tough workout. And while Level 2 is harder than Level 1 (they do crow pose, people!), Level 1 is no picnic (she warms you up with planks, if that’s any indication). And while you’re not holding poses for a long time, you are going through challenging sequences quickly with little time for rest.

And at the end of the day, that’s what I like about Jillian. She gets you in, she kicks your ass, and gets you on with your day. There is one strange part where Jillian keeps repeating “Who’s your daddy?” but no DVD is entirely perfect or free of awkward moments, I guess.

FBG Rating (Out of 5):

Best for: Advanced and intermediate FBGs looking to add some yoga or functional training moves to their day while also burning some cals! Also a good fit for those who think yoga is boring—or not a workout. (You shall be proven wrong!)

The No OM Zone

For some reason, when we got this DVD in the mail, I thought that it would be tough—a true competitor to Jillian in terms of toughness. Well, it’s not. But that’s not exactly a bad thing and after carefully looking at the DVD, I can’t really figure out why I got that impression anyway. The instructor Kim Fowler is a former triathlete so maybe her bad-assness just comes through.

Regardless, the DVD is a no-frills approach to yoga. It’s just Kim, a mat and you, and she leads you through three 15-minute workouts: one for the upper-body, one for the lower-body and one for the core. The workouts aren’t easy, but they aren’t overly challenging either, and they feature familiar poses like down dog, chatarunga, table top, dolphin and plank. Each session features a quick breathing warm-up and a cool down twist followed by corpse pose (my fave!). I was especially smitten with the core workout, which seemed to be more challenging than the others, but that may have more to do with my injury than anything else.

For those of you who aren’t fans of the instructor voiceover (ahem, Erin), this one does that feature. And while the music in the intro sounds like “In the Waiting Line” by Zero 7—one of my FAVE songs—there is no music in the workouts themselves, except for when you cool down. Bummer!

FBG Rating (Out of 5):

Overall: ★★★

Best for: Beginner and intermediate exercisers who want a quick yoga workout that isn’t airy-fairy.

Gentle Vinyasa Flow

This DVD is all about moving, breathing and flowing. And unlike the last couple, it’s totally yoga-y and pretty hippity-dippity. I really, really enjoyed it, but I would consider it more Vinyasa yoga than a true workout.

This DVD has a very gentle and relaxing vibe with moves that increase flexibility and build functional strength through poses timed to breathing. The instructor, Zyrka (now that is the name of a yogi), leads you through six yoga sequences each with their own difficulty level and length: two 30-minute sequences, two 45-minute sequences and two hour-long sequences. There are a lot of options here, which is rare for a DVD, especially yoga where you normally get just a couple of short segments to combine for a longer workout.

And take note beginning yogis: The DVD also features a unique pose guide section that gives detailed instruction on 23 poses including positioning, common mistakes, pose benefits and contraindications. This allows you to learn the basics of each pose without having to listen to detailed instructions every single time you do the workout. Bonus!

Long-Term Likeability: ★★★★★

Overall: ★★★★

Best for: Beginning and intermediate yogis who want a relaxing, moving DVD with lots of workout options and a tranquil state of mind.

FIT BOTTOMED LINE: EACH DVD BRINGS SOMETHING SPECIAL TO THE TABLE. IF YOU’RE A NEWBIE WHO LIKES THE SPIRITUAL SIDE OF YOGA, GET WITH THE VINYASA FLOW. IF YOU’RE A NEWBIE OR INTERMEDIATE EXERCISER WHO COULD DO WITHOUT THE HIP AND DIP, GO WITH ZONE. AND IF YOU’RE LOOKING FOR A CHALLENGE WITHOUT THE FLUFF, GO WITH “YOUR DADDY” JILLIAN MICHAELS.

One of the main reasons we work out is to maintain our sanity and clear our minds. While a good run or session on the elliptical does the trick, sometimes you need a good yoga DVD to really stretch and mellow out. Plus, these titles promise to burn a few calories while you do so. In typical FBG fashion, we put them to the test!

Element: Yoga for Weight Loss

Okay, so I’m a little biased when it comes to Element’s workout DVDs. They’re just always so relaxing…like a trip to the spa without the bill. And the same could be said of this workout DVD. The scenery is beautiful, the voice of instructor Ashley Turner is soothing and welcoming, and the entire 50-minute routine flows with just enough cues for safety and just enough quiet time for reflection and relaxation.

My only real complaint is that the title is a little misleading. By including the word “weight loss” in the title, I expected more moving and some sweat. Granted this DVD did have you moving more than any other Element yoga DVD I’ve done, but I wouldn’t recommend it for its calorie burn. What I would recommend it for though is it’s mental approach to weight-loss. Throughout the moves, Ashley cues you to smile, focus on your goals and envision yourself at your healthy weight. Yes, it’s hippity-dippity. And, yes, I love it. For many, the emotional/internal struggle is what weight-loss is really about.

This was our first venture into the YogaWorks series of titles, and I have to say, I’m a little torn here. In this 50-minute routine, you get the feeling that you’re in an actual yoga class (albeit a brightly lit and somewhat crowded one), which I liked. The instructor gives great cuing, but there’s JUST SO MUCH OF IT. Like she never stops talking. And her voice is kind of like Carrie Bradshaw, only higher and more nasal. Even my husband was getting annoyed, and he was sitting in the other room.

Then there’s the actual workout itself. The first half I found to be pretty easy and kind of boring. The second half? AWESOME. You constantly move, get your heart rate up, and hit just about every muscle. So, I loved it, and I hated it. So torn.

I’ve tried a couple of Hemalayaa’s Bollywood dance DVDs, and while they’re not the most challenging workouts I’ve done, they are a thoroughly enjoyable break from the gym and a lot of fun.

Hemalayaa brings her same goofy personality to Yoga for Everyone, a set of two 20-minute workouts. Both segments of the DVD are on the easier side, so it’s definitely a yoga session for someone who is slow to move in the morning but wants a stretch or for someone who wants an easy recovery day. Both segments are quite similar, so if you’re looking for a huge variety, this isn’t it. But the sessions incorporate gentle stretching in down dog and hip-opening floor lunges, squats, tree poses and forward bends. You also get to chant—”yuumm” in one segment, “ruumm” in the other—and make funny faces. The chanting and funny faces might throw you off, but they do have a strange way of relaxing you. Plus, I couldn’t help but think this would be a great introduction to yoga for kids; they would love the funny faces coupled with exhalations.

I love the laid-back, beachy vibe and the Hawaiian prints. I’m also sure that surfing is a killer full-body workout. There’s just two minor problems for me: 1) Northern California’s water is a bit chilly, and even with a wet suit I’m pretty sure I would get hypothermia and 2) I don’t like being in water, ocean water especially, where I can’t see my feet (I can trace this phobia back to my youth).

I tried the workout DVD Surf Yoga Soul in the hopes that I would feel like I was getting a surfing lesson on land. While some of the poses are geared to strengthen you for surfing, some of them you could actually do on your board in the water while waiting for the next big wave, which had never occurred to me.

Set on a beach with surf boards sticking out of the sand, it definitely had that laid-back vibe I expected. With a mix-and-match setup of seven total segments of varying lengths and difficulty, you can customize a yoga workout that fits your mood—or if you want to go all out, you can do 75 minutes straight. I chose to break up the segments over a couple of days. Thank goodness I did because one of them in particular chewed me up like a massive wave and spit me out on the sand.

Wave Meditation
This 9-minute segment is different from some of the more traditional yoga workouts I’ve tried. It focused on deep breathing, matching your breaths and movements to the rhythm of the waves. It’s a bit touchy-feely-new-agey, which some love and some hate. After some deep breaths, you go down to the mat and practice paddle moves before popping up to your “board” (aka your mat). The pop-up didn’t feel great on my lower back, but the free-form waves from a pseudo-squat got my thighs warm.

Mandala Namaskar
This 12-minute segment was one of my favorites on the disc, with moves flowing from one to the next. This section included a series of sun salutations that hit a lot of basic yoga poses—plank, boat, downward dog—but you change direction so you end up being guided through a full circle throughout the cycles. It’s an active segment that had me sweating while being relaxing and enjoyable.

Breath Wave
This 5-minute segment would be great to pop in when you’re having a rushed day and just need to clear your mind and de-stress. Instructor Shiva Rea leads you through rhythmic breathing before she does long six-count inhale/exhale cycles. Then she guides three-part inhales, which increases lung capacity and had me feeling my breath in my upper back (not a common feeling for me). This segment will give you tools to take with you anywhere for instant stress relief.

Agini Namaskar
Phew. This 17-minute segment was quite the challenge, let me tell you. Shiva guides you through nine sun salutations, incorporating both upper-body work and lower-body strengthening poses. In each of the nine cycles, you do “up to 12 push-ups.” I had to get the full effect, so I did the full 108 push-ups. You read that right: 108 push-ups. Even doing modified push-ups, it was like WHOA. She does tell you that the mind fatigues before the body, which gave me the mental strength I needed to push through. Her helpful pointers on focusing energy helped, too, but I felt every one of those push-ups the next day. This section of the DVD is killer.

Balance Flow
“Balance Flow.” That sounds harmless, right? Ha! You’d be wrong! I actually wrote “Holy schnikies” in my notes for this one. Beginners should do this segment for inspiration. Advanced yogis will be in good company. There are some great balance poses in this segment—twisting lunges, side planks—but then there are crow poses, side crow poses and crow-in-impossible-position poses. Awesome to watch; hilarious to attempt.

Flexibility Flow
Another one of my favorites, at 11 minutes, Flexibility Flow had me stretching longer and harder than my usual three-minute cool downs. Shiva gives you yoga-inspired twists on traditional shoulder and tricep stretches. It’s surprising how being so mindful of your body really helps you get a deep stretch. Planks are always a challenge, but pigeon pose, sitting forward bends and twists balance this stretch portion out nicely.

Shavasana
In this final 2-minute segment, Shiva walks you through two minutes of pure relaxation, just lying in corpse pose while breathing. Always a crowd pleaser.

With great instructions and cuing throughout, this DVD will guide you through challenges and relaxation alike. While it may not suit just anybody’s skill level, Shiva does mention modifications for difficult moves.

Fit Bottom line: While beginners can benefit from this DVD, this surf-inspired yoga workout is well-suited for intermediate to advanced yogis. A great combination of relaxation, flexibility work, balance and strength. —Erin

I have a house, yard and a 10-minute commute. I enjoy four seasons (I could do with a shorter winter, but whatev) and generally people are friendly, holding open doors for you and genuinely wanting to know how your day is or what you think of “that Britney Spears.” The one downside to living in the Midwest though is that we don’t typically have the big, fun gyms here. There’s no Powernap+ to attend, no Cirque du Soleil to fly away with. I even once saw a poster for Crunch Fitness (a super fun club, if you’ve never had the privilege to work out at one) that showed a map of the country, marking the club chain’s locations, with the headline “Sucks to be Kansas.” (Note: The only Crunch location in the Midwest is Chicago.)

What does this all have to do with a DVD review, you may be asking yourself? Well, I know that my living situation is probably not that different from a number of our readers. And I want to let them know that there is hope for those not living on the coasts—fun gyms like Crunch can come to you, in your own home and in DVD format! I’ve been a big fan of the Crunch DVD series for awhile now, but Crunch: Yoga Body Sculpt sealed the deal. Granted, the moves are nothing groundbreaking (like some of Crunch’s in-house classes), but the DVD is S-O-L-I-D. It’s the definition of what a great DVD should be. It’s easy to understand, cued well, shows modifications, has effective moves, features good music, and the instructor doesn’t drive you nutters.

The 40-minute yoga workout is said to target the thighs, butt and core, but I found it to be an good all-around power yoga session. While it is challenging in parts, it’s never too challenging, with a nice mix of moving poses, planks, standing lunges, and deep stretching (including pigeon pose, which I ADORE and rarely see in a DVD). The workout doesn’t have any extras or much of a menu (really—you push play and go straight to the instructor’s intro and then directly to the workout), which are always a nice feature, but I’ll take a solid 40-minute yoga session with no menu over a non-effective workout that is divided up nine ways to Sunday. And just like any good yoga session, this DVD lets you blissfully lie in corpse pose at the end. Nothing like feigning death to make you feel alive.

Before we begin, please, everyone take a deep breath in…

And exhale.

Feel better? Good, let’s begin.

This has to be one of the most relaxing and rejuvenating DVDs I’ve ever done, yoga or not. It’s calming, peaceful and made me smile. Seriously, the instructor Elena Brower (whose profile resembles Kristin Davis—aka Charlotte) has you smile from time to time and she somehow manages to pull it off without it feeling forced or ridiculously hippidy-dippity. No small feat. The DVD is broken into two logical segments: AM and PM. Each segment lasts about 30 minutes.

AM
Seriously, the best way to start the day. Elena leads you through an invigorating and pleasant routine that begins with easy warm-up poses and progresses to gentle sun salutations, standing poses like Warrior II and side angle, and ends with floor work including side planks, sphinx and boat pose. Your final pose is a meditation and centering exercise, which really closes the workout nicely and sets a good tone for the rest of your day. For example, after doing the AM workout before work one morning, I was able to calmly sit in a traffic jam without a noticeable rise in blood pressure. Impressive.

PM
For as much as I loved the AM, I adored the PM that much more. It was by far the most relaxing DVD I’ve ever done. EVER. It was so calming that I actually felt decadent doing it. Like it was a spa treatment or something designed just for me. You begin the segment with a seated meditation and then easily go into down dog, plank and cobra. From there, you get to deep- stretching poses like pigeon, twisting pigeon (I want to marry this pose I love it so much), child’s pose and dandasana (seated stick pose). Then you end like you began, with a seated meditation. Ahhh…

I can’t say enough about this DVD. If you are looking for an instant stress reliever, this is it. Elena has a soothing voice and is welcoming and warm. She cues well (with a voice-over that is perfectly timed to the workout) and has a fantastic way of explaining somewhat complicated yoga moves in an easy-to-understand way. The music is good, too, and Elena is in a beautiful natural setting. You couldn’t ask for more.

While the DVD is designed for beginners and is very much appropriate for beginners, I think a lot of intermediate and advanced exercisers, including yogis, can equally benefit from this DVD. It’s the perfect workout when you feel tight, are stressed or just want to do “something” but don’t have the energy for a hard-core workout. Heck, I might even use it as a reward for a hard week of workouts.

By now, you’re probably aware that Erin and I have a borderline obsession with The Biggest Loser’s Bob Harper (especially after our interview with him yesterday where we confessed our love). Those baby blues, the passion for helping others become healthy, and hours and hours of highly entertaining fitness-related TV programming…it all adds up to yum. Not to mention that Bob has not one but two new DVDs out. As a fan of the earlier The Biggest Loser workout DVDs, we had to review both of the DVDs. That’s right, today’s a BL two-fer.

The Biggest Loser Workout: Boot Camp
This 55-minute DVD is, as Bob would say, “no joke.” As someone who works out regularly, this one sufficiently kicked my arse. It has a customizable menu that allows you to choose your workout and decide between having just the music or Bob and the music (not a hard choice if you ask me). From there you can build your workout to include a warm-up (highly improved from previous BL DVDs, by the way—this one is fun, fluid and kind of challenging) up to three levels of Boot Camp and a cool down, which is fabulous and includes lots of yoga-inspired stretches and moves. (Thumbs up, Bob.)

The different levels of Boot Camp are meant to build upon each other for a total six- to eight-week program, but as an advanced exerciser, I mixed-and-matched workouts to fit my schedule and energy level. But don’t let the innocent sounding “Level 1″ Boot Camp fool you. It’s a tough workout. You do lots of upper-body moves while doing lower-body exercises followed by cardio drills for an uber calorie burn. But, you’re not sweatin’ alone; Heba, Bill, Bernie and the lovely Ali Vincent are there grunting with you, especially as you perform a crapton of walking push-ups/planks and later biceps with squats. Bob has outdone himself.

Level 2 isn’t as hard cardiovascularly as Level 1, but the strength moves are more advanced and challenging. Some of my “Oh, my God, I love/hate you, Bob” moments include V-sit abs, side planks and tricep push-downs. For Level 2, The Biggest Loser contestants use a medicine ball, but you can use a dumbbell instead. Level 3 has you use resistance bands and, despite what you’d think from the name “Level 3″ isn’t really that hard. But maybe it’s just time for me to replace my medium resistance bands with hard. And if you don’t have a resistance band, no worries, as you can, again, sub a dumbbell. The music on this DVD is a little lackluster and repetitive. It sounds like the music on the show, which is okay occasionally, but after 30 minutes of it continuously going while you’re shaking in plank, you almost wish there was a music-off option.

The Biggest Loser Workout: Weight Loss Yoga
This is the first time The Biggest Loser has done a yoga DVD, and I’m totally smitten. Bob takes the common perception that yoga isn’t a workout and bends it, twists it and makes it cry uncle through planks, rotating side planks and one long-standing chair pose that burns, baby, burns. And that’s just Level 1. Level 2 focuses heavily on the core and balance with alternating-arm/leg raises and planks with knee raises. See a theme here? P-L-A-N-K-S.

Level 3 is the best level on the DVD, maybe even both DVDs. For this section you incorporate dumbbells (I used five pounders and got sufficient burn because you do quite a few reps) into your yoga poses. Granted, some moves, like lunges with a military press are pretty transparently “fitness,” but Bob does a nice job of selling it as yoga by transitioning into Warrior II with a bicep curl. The best part of this section is its relaxing and natural flow, despite it being very challenging in parts.

Like Boot Camp, this DVD comes with a lovely warm-up and cool down that seriously made me a better person. My husband even agreed, as before my workout the laundry seemed like cause for separation while after it was no big deal. The music on this one is much, much better than on Boot Camp. In fact, I’m pretty sure that I own the music featured in the Weight Loss Yoga cool down and have actually used it while teaching group exercise classes, which may explain why I enjoy it so much.

Overall, the DVDs rocked my face off. Both of the workouts are challenging, fun and showcase plenty of Bob. They also complement each other quite nicely. The Boot Camp kicked my butt as any good boot camp should, and the Weight Loss Yoga was tough, but still left me feeling longer, leaner, yet still sweaty. I do kind of wish that each DVD’s Level 1 was a bit easier and Levels 2 and 3 progressed in difficulty (sort of like this other Biggest Loser-related DVD), but I understand the plan to get people from regular 30-minute workouts to 60-minutes.
