We recently had a reader contact us about a new website she was working for called Songza. Songza’s shtick is basically social online radio. So individuals or groups of users can create a themed radio station and then other people can access the playlist via a link and request songs to be played and added to the list. Ya’ll see where this is going?

Well, we obviously were intrigued (you know how much we love good workout music!), so we decided to create an FBG Station for all of our—and your—workout tunes! From upbeat indie tunes to Gen X pop tunes to Lady Gaga and Queen classics (of course!), it’ll get your body moving. Listen at work, at home or even from your iPhone! And please, add your fave workout songs to the FBG station—there is awesomeness in numbers, after all!

Rock that body. Come on, rock that body!

Besides being the newbie on the block (in FBG years I’m a fit bottomed baby, Avery-like), I’m also the one who stands out like a sore thumb when it comes to my tastes in music. You see, I’m not really a pop lover. I may dabble in the bubble-gum genre from time to time, but I’m usually the chick listening to either raunchy rap (good for the heart) or sappy beach music. (It’s the Los Angeles mentality creaping in.) Needless to say, I wasn’t totally stoked about reviewing Christina Aquilera’s album entitled Bi-on-ic. Her songs tend to make my butt twitch with their cheasy sexuality.

This album though…Well, let’s just say I have a new favorite running album. Milka whaaaa?! The album is chock-a-block full of fast-beat yummy jams. It’s as if Lady Gaga and Madonna threw their albums in a blendor of awesome and out poured a Bionic smoothie. Mmmm, tasty.

It just doesn’t get any better than songs like “Glam” that feature the pop princess instructing folks to work their hips from side to side. I LOVE songs that tell me what to do. Once a beat starts bumpin’, I’m pretty much a slave. Other morsels to devour include “Elastic Love,” “Hate Boys” and “My Girls.”

I warn, these songs will have you moving at a crazy pace, but thankfully there are five or so slow songs, reminiscent of Adele’s sound, that will help you catch your breath. It’s been a long time since I’ve loved every track on an album. This album is ideal if you’re the type of gal who strongly dislikes creating your own playlists. Just hit play and wait for your inner Bionic woman to kick in.

Have you heard the album? Love it? Hate it? Feared pop like I did, but now see the light? Tell us what you think! —Tish

Sometimes I really do think rock & roll should be some version of an onomatopoeia for working out. Isn’t rocking and rolling what it’s all about anyways? Let’s face it, you never see people calmly and quietly standing in place when some one’s cranking out some rockin’ tunes. Even when in the presence of a bad band that’s opening for the awesome band, I still find myself moving along with the music. It’s just impossible to stand still.

We realize it’s a hot mess in most places this time of the year. We also realize heat drains the living snot out of most of us, so with that in mind, we’re sending you rock songs that will Pied Piper you into getting off the couch and onto a stairway to heaven. I wonder how many calories one could burn from 30 minutes of intense air guitar. Hmmm…Any who, I give thee all a list of rock tunes with no rhyme or reason. The only requirement is they have to keep you moving. Add these tunes to different playlists and rock on.

Rock it Out

(5:12) The Adventure, Angels & Airwaves: This one feels like you’re running full speed down a hill. So try that. Run down a hill. Then run back up. Embrace the adventure! And check out our interview with them after.

(2:33) We Got The Beat, The Go-Go’s: Get on the treadmill and add some quick sprint intervals for this fast, upbeat song.

(2:56) The Geeks Were Right, The Faint: I recommend doing the robot on this one. Throw some light weights in your grip and go to town. Find your inner geek, and get your jock on simultaneously.

(5:42) Panic Switch, Silversun Pickups: This one will definitely get your heart pumping. I find the faster the song, the better I jump rope. Try it and let me know if the same works for you.

(4:37) Young Folks, Peter Bjorn & John: I love carefree songs. I recommend reserving this song for the days you’re hiking and need to connect with the whimsical. Who doesn’t need the whimsical?

(4:07) Dashboard, Modest Mouse: Usually I’d say modesty has no place in the land of sweat, but I love to rock this type of modesty, especially while running stairs. It’s all about the momentum…and leaning forward.

(2:22) Riot Radio, The Dead 60′s: Take flower power to a new level. Run outside and watch the flowers blow crazy-like in the wind as you zoom past them.

(3:13) 1901, Phoenix: This song was made for cruising. (Bike cruising, that is.) I have yet to hear this in my spin class, but I can guarantee that the minute I do I’ll be wailing a sweet song of burn.

(4:29) New Divide, Lincoln Park: I like the idea of a new divide. Use this song to divide the new you from the old you. Introduce yourself to the new hotness that can bench press a little bit more and run an extra lap with ease.

(3:20) Toxic, A Static Lullaby: A familiar song, but this time, pop goes rock.

(2:53) Tokoyo, Telekinesis: Another goodie for the spin bike perhaps? Mwahahaha…

(5:04) Uprising, Muse: Super set your two favorite weight training-exercises and rock out to this song for three sets. You’ll feel an uprising IN YO BUTT MUSCLES!

When I think of rock, I think of classic rock. There’s nothing like some Jimi Hendrix to get my blood flowing.
Every once in awhile a song comes along that just gets in your brain and gets comfy, staying there for weeks (if not months), and making you a tad obsessed with its beats and lyrics. A song that makes you hit repeat over and over again. A track that you shamelessly blare in your car and at home. For me, this recent obsession is the song “Bulletproof” by La Roux. And from the way ya’ll talk on Twitter, I’m not the only one. This song, with its 80s-tastic vibe, has made many of our readers psyched to work out and go a littler farther and a little harder while on the treadmill.

So today we’re reviewing the whole self-titled La Roux album. For those who love the CD, we’re preaching to the choir, but I’m hoping to also expose this new chick to those of you who haven’t stumbled upon her yet. ‘Cause seriously, if this was the workout CD of last summer, I might pick this one as this summer’s album.

The Track List: La Roux

In for the Kill (4:08)—This starter track is the best way to start a workout. It’s lively, upbeat and everything you want in a warm-up song. Plus it talks all about going in “for the kill,” which I interpret as going in “for the killer workout.”

Tigerlily (3:24)—I love the attitude and sass of this one. It’s got some serious girl power to it, so rock it out, yo. Bump up that incline or speed, find a good strong steady pace and focus on the lyrics. They’re fun. And feisty.

Quicksand (3:05)—This isn’t my fave track on the album, but it ain’t bad. Again, it’s upbeat and will get you moving. So use it for the middle of your workout, when you’re in the groove and wanting to zone.

Bulletproof (3:26)—This is the uber-catchy one that you know and love—or will love after you hear it. It’s best to use when you’re doing intervals and really need some musical help to push you. Plus you can imagine that your awesomeness is deflecting bullets. Fair warning though: It TOTALLY gets in your head and lives there.

Colourless Colour (3:28)—If “Bulletproof” is the song to get you hyped for an interval, this is the song to recover to. It isn’t sleepy, but it’s relaxed. And with lyrics about feeling the “sun on my skin,” it’s perfect for an outdoor sweat-a-thon.

I’m Not Your Toy (3:19)—This is another one of my faves on the album and it brings more girl power to your workout. If you’ve ever felt like a dude was using you or kept you hanging on for no reason other than his own enjoyment at watching you wonder what the heck is going on (almost every girl has at least one of those experiences), you will love this one. Smart lyrics, fun tempo—you can’t beat it. Another great recovery song or steady state song.

Cover My Eyes (4:32)—This track starts off slow and tender and stays that way, making it ideal for a cool down, stretching or even yoga. It’s a heartfelt, emotional song that makes you want to hug poor, brokenhearted, mohawk-clad La Roux. Poor girl. Stretch it out.

As If by Magic (3:51)—I can’t put my finger on why, but this song makes me think of my childhood. Something about capturing that innocence and wonder of the world. It also makes me think of love, just powerful, beautiful love. And who doesn’t love that? Use it as a steady state track for cardio and feel the magic.

Fascination (3:41)—La Roux picks the pace up again with this one that’s both soothing and energizing. (Actually, I’d characterize the whole album like that, which is probably why I love it so much!) It’s a great song for thinking about past relationships, experiences and other random ish from the past. So find a good moderate-intensity level and get nostalgic.

Reflections Are Protection (4:20)—I adore the opening beat on this one. Makes you want to strut. So use that ‘tude to have some fun and shake those hips a little. You’re an FBG, so shake that junk in the trunk! And if you’re in a more serious mood, listen to the lyrics. It’s deep, yo.

Armour Love (5:52)—This quiet little song evokes a little Sinéad O’Connor feel, which I’m totally okay with. While I do love the track, it’s a bit of a downer for a workout, unless you’re feeling lonely and need to sympathize with someone. Then cool it down, girlfriend.

Growing Pains (3:26)—You get one final fun and poppy track. It starts off pretty benign but becomes more high-energy as you go, so it’s a perfect go-get-’em song. Gradually pick up your pace, feel the song’s resentment, and work it out.

Track 13 (4:20)—This untitled bonus track is fun and like “Growing Pains,” it builds. Also great for a cool down or recovery, it’s a techno-electronic track that has a message that can hilariously (and wrongly, I’m sure) be applied to working out: “Finally, my savior is here.”

So when Deekron “The Fitness DJ” offered up his mixing skills, we took him up on it. Deekron is the DJ for MotionTraxx, which provides free music downloads for workouts. The mixes feature songs with steady beats and synchronize the tempo of the music to the pace of the movements. MotionTraxx is popular among runners, but there are also episodes for cardio work, cycling, walking and interval training. With Jenn and Tish’s newfound “love” for cycling, we thought it would be fun to get a cycling-centric playlist going on up in the FBG house of music.

The assignment was simple. All I had to do was come up with a list of songs for Fit Bottomed Dude’s week —a friendly he- man mix, if you will. What Jenn and Erin failed to realize is that I’m the weirdest person when it comes to hearing men’s voices when I work out.

Let me explain. I have a playlist entitled, “Estrogen” on my iPod because I get wiggy sometimes and just NEED to hear women’s voices. I, by no means, loathe the opposite gender. (Indeed I love me some brute-y cuties.) I just don’t always want to hear baritones, ya dig? Because of my quirk, I had to ask the world at large to help me out with this one. Lucky for me (and you), the world isn’t as weird as moi. Suggestions came pouring in. I am not afraid to admit that even I love this 55-minute manly mix.

Tunes for Dudes Playlist

(4:27) Times Like These, Foo Fighters: I heard through the grapevine Lance Armstrong pedals to this metal. (Well, the Fighters aren’t really metal rock, but it sounded cool.) Anything that gets a force like Lance’s heart moving is a sure thing in my book.

(3:31) I want to Ride my Bicycle, Queen: You know we fit bottomed gals are partial to Queen. I have no clue why I’m on a bike kick, but stick with me, kids. The bell sounds in the middle are a great spot for a little rest break. Then we pick it right up again full force. When Queen starts to rock again, let it be a sign from the rock gods to move to the second position and pedal like you really do want to ride your bicycle.

(5:04) B.O.B., Outkast: I’ve learned in ChiRunning that it’s best on the body to run at a faster pace and like a Kenyan. How fast is fast, you ask? This Outkast beat is sublime, according to my ChiRunning instructor. Keep up with the song for as long as you can. I guarantee your heart rate will feel like it wants to explode by the end of mile 1. Just remember it’s all about keeping your core tight and bending slightly with your head forward. Believe me, you’ll run fast.

(3:37) Bonita Applebum, Tribe Called Quest: After an Outkast invasion, it’s only fair to slow down the pace with a classic. I’ll admit, I’m a sap for songs praising the tokhes.

(5:31) Fistful of Steel: Rage Against the Machine: We’ve all seen Fight Club. We know men love to release the beast and let go of the testosterone build-up that is ever so prevalent. (Isn’t that the force behind all the grunting in the gym?) For that reason alone, I give you a song to mirror your inner rage. Let it out bro, just let it out.

(2:55) Woman, Wolfmother: Hearing new hotness when you work out is a must. You tend to work harder when you hear a new song with a great beat. Wolfmother will not let you down.

(4:14) Control Freak, Saul Williams: I think I’ve found the perfect jump-roping song. Improve your endurance and your vertical jump while jamming to this poet-turned-rocker. Girls will admire your depth—and the great heights you can reach on and off the basketball court.

(4:47) Mama Said Knock You Out, LL Cool J: No playlist is complete without the man who wrote the flipping book on fitness. Seriously, he wrote a book. Be like Cool James, throw this into your rotation and get in a boxing ring. We all know what boxing can do for the body. Now you have the tunes to motivate you to grab those gloves.

(3:41) A Milli, Little Wayne: “Little man, big beats.” Turn this one up and direct your attention to some dips, pull-ups and push-ups. You’ll feel like a milli once the three start to change your upper body.

(5:11) Stronger, Kanye: This song has found its way into the playlist of every broham I know, so for that reason I have to give the dude his props. I’m an advocate for pushing our laziness and mental fatigue to the side and pushing the body. What doesn’t kill your muscles will only make them stronger.

(4:04) Joe, Spencer Day: Chill songs are always welcome in a workout playlist, in my opinion. This jazzy song’s perfect for the guys with a soft spot for slower-paced reps.

(5:31) Enter Sandman, Metallica: Keep up with this song, and you’ll be wanting the sandman later.

(3:53) Eye of the Tiger, Rocky Soundtrack: Don’t say I didn’t do my research. Every guy in the frickin’ world wanted to be Rocky at some point in his life. Every class I find myself taking that involves a male instructor results in me hearing this song. Power on, tiger!

(3:27) Love Song, 311: Yeah, yeah I know guys. A love song found its way into the list, but it’s 311, man. I mean, come on. Trust me when I say it’s the ultimate cool down.

Over the last year and a half, we’ve given you a lot of good workout tunes. But, we’ll be the first to admit that we err on the side of bubblegum-pop most of the time. (Please don’t hate us for our Britney!) But don’t pigeon-hole us FBGs. When it comes down to it, we love anything that gets us moving.

That’s why when the lovely Ms. Elizabeth from Ten Thousand Minutes (awesome concept for a blog, by the way) suggested a more indie/off-the-beaten-path soundtrack for any cardio activity, we jumped at the opportunity. Here are her 14 get-movin’ tracks. You may know or recognize the covers of a few, but we guarantee you’ll find a few new gems in this hour-long playlist. We know we did, and now it’s on our heavy workout rotation!

Off-the-Beaten-Path Playlist

(4:10) Bette Davis Eyes, Sexton Blake: You probably know this track that was originally done by Kim Carnes, but believe us, Sexton Blake’s version is just as sexy and just as perfect for a warm-up.

(5:26) Banquet (Dance Remix), Block Party: After the warm-up, you’ll be ready to get moving when you hear the first beats of this amped-up track. It’s half dance, half rock, and full-out awesome. Use the track’s 5-plus minutes to pick that pace up to a medium intensity.

(3:29) Magic, Ladyhawke: So, I’m a little obsessed with this song. It’s just the perfect track to zone out to and get in the flow of your workout. (It is called “Magic” after all!) Maintain your medium intensity here, maybe slightly increasing your speed or incline.

(5:03) Kids, MGMT: You may have heard this one on alternative radio already, and it rocks. From the sound of kids playing in the background to interesting lyrics, use this song’s five minutes to slowly up your intensity to hard by the end. The song picks up as it goes, so it’s natural.

(3:08) Girls Just Want to Have Fun, Starf*cker: Don’t let this band’s dirty name fool you. This song is just as fun as Cyndi Lauper’s version, but with more of an indie edge to it. I promise it’ll make you hear the song in a whole new way. Return back to a medium intensity for this track, speeding back up to hard when you hear the chorus.

(4:45) Play Your Part (Pt. 1), Girl Talk: So this one comes with a Parental Advisory Label for the first 10 seconds, but it’s so high energy and fun that we had to include it. The song features a number of popular songs from all decades and genres. You’ll even here some Queen, and we’re in love with the “Walk It Out” part. Classic. Bring your pace up to medium-hard for this entire song.

(4:49) Quality Control, Jurassic 5: This slower yet fun-kay jam gives you the perfect break in your workout. Slow your roll to a medium-easy pace, recover and enjoy.

(3:17) Meddle, Little Boots: This is my favorite of the whole playlist! So pick that intensity back up to hard for 30 seconds, medium for 30 seconds and repeat three times. And don’t “meddle” with the plan. Just do it. You’ll love it. Promise.

(2:27) Cheap and Cheerful, The Kills: This may start out sounding a bit like a high school cheer song, but it’s anything but soft and fuzzy. It’s pretty dang in-your-face and dark, and we love it for that. This time continue those medium to hard intervals, but instead of 30 seconds each, up it to 1 minute each. You should be able to get through at least two!

(1:58) French Grass, HollAnd: Okay, now it’s recover time. Work that pace down to medium, then easy. This is a short song, but it’s a pretty one. Makes me want to go to Paris and drive around quickly in a Jetta.

(4:19) Crimewave, Crystal Castles vs. Health: Welcome to techno. My goodness this song is fun. Slowly pick your pace back up to medium-hard with this one, as you imagine yourself on a dance floor with only a disco ball shining on you. Just try not to do the Robot. I dare you.

(3:01) You’ll Find a Way, Santogold: Santogold is one of those artists that I just discovered and keep falling in love with every time I hear her. She is totally funky, poppy and fun. Very high energy. For this song’s full three minutes, pick up that pace to a full sprint. Believe me, the beat will make you want to speed up.

(3:25) Play Your Part (Pt. 2), Girl Talk: In this Part 2 of track No. 6, you’ll want to take a short 30-second break to recover. Then push it as hard as you can for the next three minutes. This is your final song before the cool down, so let the medley of tracks (there’s even JOURNEY on here) get you through! (And, seriously, Girl Talk is so fun, just go ahead and download the entire album!)

(4:36) Let Us Be Loving, Alice Russell: Cool down time! Slow your pace and intensity to easy and just enjoy Alice Russell’s amazing and smoooth voice. And say “goodbye” to those calories you just burned! Then go be loving to yourself.

A BIG thanks to Lizzy for the help on this one. Loved it! —Jenn

A few weeks ago, after borrowing this album from Erin and falling madly, deeply and passionately in love with its catchy poppiness, I started following Lady GaGa on Facebook. Much to my pleasure, Ms. GaGa updates pretty regularly—and she calls her fans “little monsters.” For some bizarre reason, this is the cutest and most perfect pet name for GaGa fans in my opinion, and whenever I see it, I smile agreeing that, yes, I am a little GaGa monster. Heck, the woman is named after a Queen song. I really have no choice but to bow at her weirdly dressed feet and declare “I’m not worthy,” a la Wayne Campbell and Garth Algar circa 1992.

Now that I’ve declared my love, let’s review GaGa’s latest album release, The Fame Monster. This album is an addition/continuation to The Fame, showing the dark side of celebrity. As you’ll see though, this eight-track CD is plenty energizing and true to the monsters, albeit with more emotion and less overt sexuality (a good and a bad in my opinion).

The Track List: Lady GaGa, The Fame Monster

Bad Romance (4:54)—I’m a little more than obsessed with this one. And thank goodness I convinced my husband that she’s a talented performer (see Queen reference above) and not just a sex kitten so that I can listen to it on repeat without him threatening to leave me. Whether I’m cleaning the house, busting a move in the car at a stoplight (yep, been known to do that) or bumping up the speed on the treadie, it is my current go-to song. (And it’s super fun to sing the line “I’m a free bitch, baby!” I find it paradoxically inspiring.)

Alejandro (4:34)—This is a slower track than “Bad Romance,” but it’s still fun. The talking intro is super theatrical, and the entire song reminds me of Madonna’s “La Isla Bonita” with a GaGa twist. Save this song for the middle of your workout when you’re bored and need a distraction. This song tells a story.

Monster (4:09)—Definitely the darker side here with lines like “He ate my heart.” Poor Lady GaGa. But the track still has a dang good beat. And is kinda Brit-like. It’s really a great bitter warm-up song.

Speechless	(4:31)—You can definitely hear the Queen influence of this track in the beginning, and then GaGa gives you almost a twang, and then it reminds me of some of the deeper feeling songs that Christina Aguilera did on this album (and, yes, that album was more than just wet ass-less chaps, believe it or not). Plus, she plays the piano in it, which I love. Perfect for a cool down.

Dance In The Dark (4:49)—This breathy, techno track instantly had a place in my heart when I heard its sampling of George Michael’s “Careless Whisper.” It’s definitely high energy and a little disco-y, but the lyrics are dark, even mentioning celeb tragedies, such as JonBenét Ramsey.

Telephone (3:40)—Featuring Beyoncé, this one is f-u-n. Very woman-empowering with some really freakin’ strong vocals. Perfect for a workout!

So Happy I Could Die (3:55)—Yes, this song talks about Lady touching herself a lot, but I think it’s more in a “I’m here; I’m present” sort of way. At least that’s my story, and I’m sticking to it. This track makes for a great recovery song when doing intervals. Just beware, she sings about red wine a lot, and it sure gives this FBG a craving for a good red zin post-workout!

Teeth (3:40)—The final track doesn’t disappoint. It’s funky, fun and exactly what you’d expect for a dark Lady GaGa song, including a chorus repeating “Show me your teeth.” I love the song’s sass. And, again, it’s theatrics. Save it for when you’re ready to pick up the pace!

Now I know that not everyone loves the GaGa as much as we do. Tell us, do you love or hate her? And if you love her, what’s your fave GaGa song, little monsters? —Jenn

Where there’s a rhyme, there’s a reason they say. If you recall, Nike hooked a sister up with mad access to the 2010 U.S. Winter Olympics team. While it is inevitable that fit bottomed girls around the nation drool over answers pertaining to how these women got their perfectly fit rumps, legs, arms…you get the drift…I’m sure you never considered the muses behind the muscle.

One thing all fit bottomed girls have in common is the hits that help the trainings go round. I had the opportunity to ask the panel of Olympian ladies what they listen to during workouts. The following songs help figure skaters, hockey players, skiers and skeleton folks do their thug-thizzle. Just think, the Red Hot Chili Peppers could be responsible for America taking home the gold!

Olympian Jams Playlist

(5:00) Butterfly, Jason Mraz: After listening to this little energetic naughtiness you’ll find reason enough to stretch your body out. Preparation never sounded so inspirationally baudy. This is pair skater Keauna McLaughlin’s favorite and absolute perfection as a warm-up.

(4:29) We Made You, Eminem: Every workout needs a catchy beat to get the heart pumping. First the head starts bobbing side to side, and before you know it, you’ve gradually picked up the pace. This other Keauna fave has just enough anger to put her in the competitive mood.

(5:07) Clocks, Coldplay: This track had Keauna and her partner Rockne Brubaker flying all over the ice. There’s just something about this haunting song that makes you want to get up and move. It’s all about beautiful inspiration, right? Makes me wanna twirl on some ice. Twirling is great cardio, FYI.

(5:04) M.O.N.I., DJ Cobra: You won’t hear any mellow vibes bouncing out of Katie Uhlaender’s ear phones. In the sport of skeleton racing, athletes such as Katie descend down a bobsled track head first (their chin and toes only millimeters from the ice) while balancing on an aerodynamic, rectangular steel and fiberglass sled. They do this while going 130 mph. Repetitive, fast-paced music is perfect for those trying dare-devil moves in their workouts.

(4:44) Give It Away, Red Hot Chili Peppers: This song is Katie’s top choice for lifting. Just imagine that darling lead singer, and the muscles he’s acquired that you, too, can have. Be your own Olympian.

(4:12) Big Poppa, Notorious B.I.G.: Another Katie fave, this song is perfect for when you need to slow down the pace but keep things gangster-champion. I recommend a couple sets of squats and lunges. Create a positive relationship between rap and your bottom once and for all.

(3:30) Single Ladies, Beyonce: Every gal should have this song within reach. Substitute “ring” for medal and go to town doing the Beyonce dance. Precious metals are great incentive to sweat it out a couple more minutes in the gym. Just ask hockey player Angela Ruggiero, who loves this track.

(3:26) Magic, Colbie Cailatt: This cool down song is a must-listen for Keauna. Her name is Hawaiian and means “feminine wind running through the forest,” and she fittingly rocks a pink iPod and leans more towards heart flutters than heart pumps. Perfect for cooling down.
