And today? Well, we’re giving you a mouth-watering recipe—no, really, they’re hot!—for Teriyaki Chicken Wings with Hot Mango Dipping Sauce. A big thanks to Registered Dietitian Sarah Ladden and Stevia in the Raw for the below tasty Super Bowl recipe that’s certainly healthier than your usual chicken wings…

Perfect Super Bowl Recipe: Teriyaki Chicken Wings with Hot Mango Dipping Sauce

Brushing several times with an all-natural sauce gives these baked wings intense flavor and crunchy skin. The chile-spiked fruit dipping sauce makes the perfect partner.

Chicken Wings Ingredients
1/2 c reduced-sodium soy sauce
1/2 c reduced-sodium chicken broth
1/4 c mirin (Japanese rice wine)
1/3 c Stevia In The Raw Baker’s Bag
2 tbsp defrosted orange juice concentrate
2 garlic cloves, sliced lengthwise
3/4-inch fresh ginger, in 3 slices
16 chicken wings, about 3 1/4 pounds

Directions
1. In small saucepan, combine all the sauce ingredients. Boil sauce over medium-high heat for 10 minutes. Cool sauce to room temperature. If desired, remove garlic and ginger, transfer sauce to tightly covered container, and refrigerate for up to 24 hours.

2. Preheat oven to 425° F. Line baking pan, 15” x 11” or larger, with foil. Coat two (10” x 10”) wire racks with cooking spray and set in the pan, overlapping them.

3. Cut off first joint of chicken wings and discard. Arrange wings in prepared baking pan in one layer, smooth side up. Bake wings for 10 minutes. Brush wings on both sides with sauce and bake, smooth side up, for 5 minutes.

4. Brush with sauce again and bake, underside up, for 5 minutes. Brush wings a third time and bake, smooth side up, for 5 minutes. Brush wings again, and bake, underside up, for 10 minutes. Reduce oven to 400° F. Brush tops of wings with sauce and bake, topside up, for 10 minutes.

5. Arrange wings on serving plate. Discard any remaining sauce. Serve accompanied by Hot Mango Dipping Sauce.

Dipping Sauce Ingredients
1 c diced fresh mango
2 tbsp brown mustard
2 tbsp orange marmalade fruit spread
2 packets Stevia In The Raw
1 tbsp fresh lime juice
1 /8 tsp cayenne pepper
1 /2 tsp salt
1 /8 tsp freshly ground pepper
2 tbsp chopped scallions

Directions
1. In mini-food processor, whirl all sauce ingredients except scallions together until smooth. Transfer sauce to bowl and garnish with scallions. Makes eight (two-tablespoon) servings.

Nutrition information per serving (2 wings plus 2 tablespoons dipping sauce): 127 calories, 2 g fat (<1 g saturated fat), 14 g carbohydrate, 14 g protein, 0 g dietary fiber, 645 mg sodium.

What a tasty way to get some protein without all the calories you usually see in chicken wings. What’s your favorite healthy Super Bowl recipe? Share it in the comments—we’d love to hear what you make that’s FBG-approved! —Jenn

Salty, sweet, refreshing and even a little (healthy) fatty, they pretty much cover the gamut of taste sensations. Go snacks, go!

1. It’s kind of like mixing hot salsa with guac. Naturally free of sodium and cholesterol, this guac is also a good source of heart-healthy monounsaturated fat, folate and vitamin B6. Yum…

Now that my mom has gone gluten-free (and to be honest, I tend to feel better when I avoid gluten, too), I’m much more on the lookout for foods with the GF label on them. And there seem to be more and more of them—thankfully—these days. Recent case in point, Rise Bar, a whole new line of gluten-free and all-natural nutrition bars.

When the company asked if we wanted to try a few of them, I eagerly accepted, thinking we’d get a handful of bars to review (which is usually standard procedure when we review something) and hopefully a new type of protein bar to suggest to my mom for snacks on the go. Well, unlike most protein bars that have just a few flavors, Rise Bar has like 50 flavors. Okay, that’s an exaggeration, but there are a lot, and they all have something special about them. There’s Rise Breakfast, Rise Energy+ and Rise Protein+, all of which are vegetarian, Kosher, gluten-free, and do not contain GMOs, preservatives, peanuts or soy. Many of them are also certified organic, vegan and dairy-free options, but you have to check out each one’s label to be sure. So it pretty much took us almost a month to nosh on all of these. You know, someone has to do it…

Rise Breakfast Bar

The Rise Breakfast Bar was previously called Boomi Bar and is made with hearty chunks of fruits and nuts. It kind of reminds me of a Larabar, just with bigger chunks. The breakfast bars contain no trans fat and are 100 percent all-natural and dairy-free. They’re also available in: Crunchy Cashew Almond, Crunchy Cranberry Apple, Crunchy Honey Walnut, Crunchy Macadamia Pineapple and Crunchy Perfect Pumpkin. Of the bunch, my favorites were Crunchy Macadamia Pineapple, which is like a vacation for your mouth, and Crunchy Perfect Pumpkin, which was just like munching on a bunch of pumpkin seeds (if you like that kind of thing—like I do!).

Yeah, us, too. Sometimes you just need to mix things up, especially when you’re on the go. So when we first were offered the opportunity to try SmartyBars—a snack that actually isn’t a bar at all—our interest was piqued and we, well, bit at the chance. And kept biting…and biting…

SmartyBars are a fruit-based, whole-food snack that comes in a cup. With no added sweeteners, added flavors or chemical concoctions, it has an ingredient list that is refreshingly simple: fruit, quinoa, gluten-free oats and walnuts.

With 100 calories a serving (there are four snack-sized servings in a cup), 2.5 grams of fat, 2 grams of fiber and 2 grams of protein, they’re a vegan and gluten-free snack that has some good nutrition to it. Each serving does have 10 grams of sugar, but at least you know it’s not added sugars or unnatural ones. You can buy a six-pack of SmartyBars online for $24, which isn’t cheap. But, hey, you have to pay to get quality ingredients sometimes.

While I do wish these had more protein, for a snack I really enjoyed them. Each bite-sized square is slightly chewy and dense, so it doesn’t take many to tame a hungry belly not does it weigh you down during a workout. I tried the Apricot SmartyBars and the Banana SmartyBars, and slightly preferred the flavor of the Banana, although to be honest they tasted pretty similar. Both have a pretty healthy, whole-grain taste and they’re not overly sweet, which I prefer. They do have a bit of an aftertaste though—not a bad one by any means, but one that will make you want to take a sip or two of water. (Which, again, isn’t a bad thing since most of us could all drink more water.)

Curious about SmartyBars? Want to try some bite-sized energy for yourself? Leave a comment below with what ingredient you like most in SmartyBars and two random U.S. commenters will win a six-pack, which includes three of each flavor. Yum, yum! —Jenn

There are three flavors in the NuGo Slim line (Roasted Peanut and Brownie Crunch are delicious—trust), but today we’re focusing on Raspberry Truffle. Dubbed as an “almost sugar-free protein bar,” we do like that it doesn’t contain any artificial sweeteners or maltitol and only has two grams of sugar. It also has 170 calories, 15 grams of protein and 10 grams of fiber from chicory root. (Holy fiber!) So, yeah, not too shabby. The bars are also made with real dark chocolate and are certified gluten-free and Kosher. You wouldn’t find any high-fructose corn syrup, hydrogenated oils or trans fats on the ingredient list either.

Guys, there’s not much to complain about these because, besides a pretty good nutritional profile, they also taste pretty good. I’m generally not a huge fan of chocolate-covered raspberries, but this bar has a strong natural raspberry taste along with a very real chocolate taste. The bars are a bit smaller than I’d like, but they are filling. I had half of one before a workout and then the other half after and found that it didn’t upset my stomach (although, let me just say that the fiber did its job a few hours later) and kept me fueled.

Fruit is awesome. Fruit is healthy. Therefore, Tish and I wanted to share four fruit-on-the-go options you’re probably seeing on store shelves. We recently learned about these at the Dole Healthy Lifestyle Blogger Summit. Here’s our tasty (and honest—of course!) thoughts on the new Dole Real Fruit Bites, Grapefruit Bowls, Shakers and Crisps!

Dole Real Fruit Bites

Tish is the Dole Diva of Digging In. And she went just a bit groupie on all things Dole at the summit, including the Dole Real Fruit Bites. She’s not much of a candy girl, but when she does have a hankering for something sweet and delightful, she now reaches for the yogurt-covered Pineapple Chunks. She even puts them in her boyfriend’s lunch bag sometimes. My sweet tooth, on the other hand, prefers something a bit more natural and less sugary. I liked the Mango Chunks best, as they were slightly less sweet than the Pineapple Chunks, but I also liked the Apple Chunks before a run. (The Pineapple Chunks have a whopping 14 grams of sugar, while Mango and Apple have 11 grams. I can totally taste that difference, too!)

Dole Fruit Bowls in 100 Percent Juice

Is there anything better than a fresh grapefruit? Well, maybe grapefruit that’s already peeled and ready for eating because that can be a pain in the fit bottomed rear. This is why when Dole told us they had a new Red Grapefruit Sunrise Fruit Bowl in 100 percent fruit juice, I was stoked. If you’re a grapefruit lover like I am, you can’t go wrong with these. They are resealable, include a small fork and are just the right mix of grapefruit-y sourness and natural sweetness. There are 140 calories in a 7-ounce bowl, and you get 80 percent of your vitamin C for the day. Truly a fruit pick for on-the-go grapefruit-lovers! (I know from experience that they are an awesome travel snack…)

Dole Shakers

The Dole Shakers that feature fruit and freeze-dried yogurt are quick, easy and fun. Add liquid, shake them up, and you’re good to go. Every time Tish shakes one, she starts singing any song she can think of that involves shaking and shimmying. (For real.) Each shake contains 90 calories, as long as you add just water. (They’re tasty with milk and juice, but you have to remember to tack on the extra calories.) The Shakers come in Mixed Berry, Strawberry and, Tish’s favorite flavor, Strawberry Banana. Each has calcium and pre- and probiotics, along with a little protein and fiber. While I’ll agree that these are pretty tasty, I’d rather make my own smoothies at home (the freeze-dried yogurt reminds me of space food). But I’ll agree with Tish that shaking them up is super fun.

Dole Crisp

I swear these things came right out of Willy Wonka’s factory. Dole found a way to take Tish’s favorite naughty apple crisp dessert and make it a pretty low-cal indulgence. The Dole Fruit Crisps come in Apple Cinnamon, Apple Pear and Peach. Each have about 150 calories, 3.5 grams of fat, 2 grams of fiber and 2 grams of protein. They’re high on the sugar-side with 20 grams—but, ladies, it is dessert (and dessert should be sweet). While you can eat these cold, we prefer to heat them up in the microwave. Simply open the bowl of fruit in its yummy fruit sauce, then sprinkle with the second container of whole-grain oats and brown sugar (if you wanted to cut down on calories and sugar, you could only use half here). Seriously perfect for this time of year, when you’re looking for a warm dessert. Apple Cinnamon was our favorite, but all are pretty good.

One of those “food rules” that has never worked for me is the idea of the mini-meal. Some people swear by mini-meals for weight-loss and maintenance, but I’m pretty sure I’d go insane eating six 300-or-so calorie meals in a day. Firstly, isn’t that a lot of planning? Especially for those who work outside of the home? Do you just have tons of snacks in your work fridge? Secondly, what happens when you want a bigger meal, like you get a hankering for a big piece of lasagna and a salad? Thirdly, do you ever feel satisfied or do you just feel like you’ll need to eat in another hour or two (which you will)?

My days typically start with a fairly light breakfast—coffee, cereal and fruit. I eat a slightly larger lunch, usually leftovers from the night before. I snack in the afternoon if I’m feeling hungry, and then my largest meal is dinner. I know, it’s the total opposite of the whole “breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, dinner like a pauper” philosophy. But it’s always worked for me.

Lately, though, the little bun in my oven has thrown my three-square-meal eating plans for a loop. I’m hungry all the time, yet if I have large meals I pay for it in heartburn. I have my usual breakfast and lunch and then an afternoon snack. Or two! Then dinner. And then an evening snack. Or two! My suspicions have been confirmed about how time consuming it is to be a mini-mealer. I feel like my life revolves around my need to eat constantly. I feel like I eat all day, and I feel like I’m eating the same stuff all the time. I know mini-meals help keep glucose levels steady and can boost metabolism, but I miss feeling full after a normal meal, and I miss my life not being ruled by my stomach! Until I get back to my normal, I’ll just keep wondering how you mini-mealers do it…

I’d love to know your big thoughts on mini-meals. Are you a mini-meal advocate? Let me know why it works for you (or why it never has)! —Erin

And, you know, tasty as they are, smoothies aren’t always super easy to make and clean up, unless you a) have a industrial-strength blender that crushes frozen ice like it’s a joke and b) have someone around to do dishes for you (man, spinach gets caked on!). So popping in a store to pick up some post-workout nutrition when on the go is pretty rad.

I’ve been into Smoothie King a handful of times in my neighborhood. And I’ve tried their lower-calorie protein smoothies before, but I always wished they were a little more natural and a lot more exciting. So when we had the chance to try Smoothie King’s new Lean1 Smoothie, which is lactose free and contains omega-3 fatty acids, 17 fruits and vegetables, minerals and three grams of fiber, it seemed like it was time to give the smoothie chain another go-round.

After a particularly intense workout, my hubs and I rolled up to get our Lean1 on. I ordered a 20-ounce (the smallest size) in strawberry. He did the same in vanilla. Designed as a meal-replacement shake, we got them more as a large after-workout snack (or mini-meal) that would tide us over until a late lunch on a Saturday. And it did tide us over. With just less than 300 calories, we each got 20+ grams of protein. Smoothie King boasts that these weight-loss smoothies help your body burn body fat up to 68 percent faster, tone and define lean muscle, speed recovery from workouts and help suppress appetite. I didn’t feel like it was a cure-all by any means, and in two hours we were both ready to eat again, but it did feel more filling than a glass of chocolate milk or a piece of fruit. And, again, we had one heck of a workout to put it to the test.

Now about the flavor. I liked the strawberry. Made with just strawberries and the Lean1 formula, it tasted like a real strawberry milkshake—creamy and berry-ific. Now my husband’s vanilla? Despite being made of just bananas, almonds and Lean1 formula, it tasted way more diet-y with a weird sugar-substitute aftertaste. While I would order the strawberry again if I was in a pinch, I’d avoid the vanilla and make my own smoothie at home instead.

It’s easy to feel like you’re offering and eating the same foods over and over again. I try to stick to whole foods to avoid added sugar and unnecessary ingredients, but a recent find is the next best thing to whole fruit.

That’s it. bars contain fruit and nothing else. Makes reading the ingredient list very easy. The company sent me several flavor combinations to try, so try I did. One version contained an apple and 10 cherries; another had an apple and three apricots; a third offered an apple and a pear. With just 100 calories per bar and 3 grams of fiber, the bars are gluten free, kosher and vegan. It’s truly just fruit. That’s it.

So how do they taste? Read on for the taste test of all three versions! —Erin

And I love to entertain. But I wasn’t sure about 34 Degrees’ Whole Grain Crispbread. When it comes to dips, I’m usually a wheat cracker girl, not a crispbread girl. But this crispbread seemed to be shaped more like a cracker. (There was no judging a book by its cover on this one—they were tightly packed in the box-like tray.) So one night my hubs and I opened the container with cheese and hummus in hand. You know to be prepared for the worst, but still keeping an open mind. Right. That’s it…an open mind.

To my delight, the crispbread crackers (which really are a mix of the two!) were quite delicious by themselves and didn’t need cheese or hummus. But the pairings were complements to the cracker and did them justice. The hubs even ate more hummus than normal with the crackers, though he wasn’t too thrilled when they broke often while dipping them in the hummus. They are very light and airy, making them delightful yet easily breakable. A night or two later, we were still munching on the crackers—soon to be gone but not quite. Gotta save some for those midnight cravings, right?

The crackers are definitely an easy eat, as the light and airiness of them makes it easy to eat half the package when you first open them. (Oh, we did that). But don’t feel bad about eating a lot! There are only 35 calories, no fat, 7 grams of carbs and 1 gram of fiber per nine-cracker serving. Overall, a pretty healthy cracker!

I would say that if you plan to eat 34 Degrees Whole Grain Crispbread with cheese, make it a soft cheese you can top or easily spread, otherwise you’ll have a mess of broken, sad crispbread crackers. As a gal who enjoys entertaining, I would serve these again as an appetizer with some goat cheese or fruit spread. Yum!
