Yesterday we had the chance to talk to Tara Costa, former fierce competitor on The Biggest Loser and overall awesome chick. In that interview, we mentioned that she appears in one of BL’s workout DVDs and actually leads the workout in another recent BL release. Today we put those two BL workout DVDs to the FBG test! (And it’s a tall test because we already loved and reviewed these DVDs and this one as must-owns…) May The Biggest Loser DVD fun begin!

Last Chance Workout

If you regularly watch the show, the phrase “Last Chance Workout” is one that you know and you love (so fun to see what the trainers have them do) and you can only imagine what pain it inflicts on the BL contestants. Well with this DVD you can get a small idea of what they go through for last chance workouts. I’m sure this hour-long DVD isn’t half as tough as what they do on the show, but it ain’t easy.

The DVD is broken down into chapters so that you can easily mix and match workouts (a must-have feature these days). You get an 8-minute warm-up (the DVD says it’s 5 minutes, but they lie!), a 27-minute last chance workout that alternates cardio drills with strength moves, a 10-minute upper-body sculpt, 10-minute lower-body sculpt and a quick 5-minute cool down. If you’re a glutton for punishment, like me, you do all of those segments—back to back.

After some dynamic stretching, you get right into the last chance segment. With basic jacks, jabs and kicks plus rows, bicep curls and raises in a circuit format, it’s not easy, but it’s not terrible. Your heart rate is up but if you work out regularly, it’s doable. Then the final circuit comes with mountain climbers with mean variations. OMG, the terribleness. And that terribleness carried over into the upper-body sculpt when my arms were shaking like leaves. The lower-body section was a little easier, but still had enough versions of lunges to leave my quads tender the next day.

I should not have been surprised though. Jillian is the instructor. And it’s well known that Jillian doesn’t disappoint in the kick-your-ass department. Plus, she’s joined by past cast members Daniel, our Tara (I think we can call her “ours,” right?), Allan and others, which is super fun to watch, and you really get a feel for how much fun these guys have on the show, even though they’re literally working their tails off.

FBG Rating (Out of 5):
Instruction: ★★★★
Long-Term Likeability: ★★★★
Music: ★★★★
Fun Factor: ★★★★
Meets Expectations: ★★★★

Overall: ★★★★

Best for: Those who love the show—and need a more accessible and doable last-chance workout to do at home.

30-Day Jump Start

Now this DVD is the one that Tara instructs. And for not being a trained fitness professional, girlfriend does a pretty good job. She gives solid modifications, is encouraging without being annoyingly perky and she really makes you want to do it! Success! Ali Vincent (our other girl) also does some instruction, along with Sione. All good. So of the four people shown on the cover, three of them are actually IN THE VIDEO. Meaning that Bob is not in the DVD. What was that noise? Oh, that was the sound of my heart breaking. Yes, Bob is in the tips, but that ish does not count. Fast tear. Slow tear.

So despite the tears, I really enjoyed this one. Having the BL threesome lead the workouts gives it a very real feeling, and it was refreshing to work out with normal folks versus fitness models. They sweat, they jiggle, they giggle and they’re out of breath. It’s pretty awesome. And with five 10-minute segments of cardio (two of those sections), upper body, lower body, ab/core, it’s easy to mix and match your workout. On this DVD though, you can’t program your workout like you could in past BL DVDs. Sad face.

This is definitely the less-hard of the two BL DVDs we’re reviewing today, but I still really liked it. It’s a solid workout with plenty of good strength and cardio moves, plus a lot of planks. Advanced exercisers will find it pretty easy, but for you beginners and intermediates, it’s juuussst right. Even without Bob.

FBG Rating (Out of 5):
Instruction: ★★★
Long-Term Likeability: ★★★★
Music: ★★★★
Fun Factor: ★★★★
Meets Expectations: ★★★

Overall: ★★★1/2

Best for: Those who want a workout with normal people in it!

And overall, if you’re a fan of the BL workout DVD series, these are a good addition to your collection! —Jenn

We couldn’t agree more!

The series of advertisements features some very talented (and rhythmic!) Americans. And we love that exercise is being promoted as a way to feel better and cope with a disability. Be sure to check out the website, too, as it has some fantastic resources, such as a tool for assessing your risk, a movement tracker, a live news feed, community support forums and a local event locator.

Second, she’s totally genuine and refreshing, often speaking the truth even when it’s hard. And third, she’s a tough competitor who never gives up and always pushes that extra bit. In fact, during season 7 of the show, she won a BL record-setting eight challenges. Eight! Oh, and on the show she lost 155 pounds (see her before and after photos here), and then later ran a marathon and did a triathalon. I heart her.

Tara grew up in a single-parent home in a small town. With her mother’s lessons in personal achievement and independence, Tara became a plus-size model for a top New York modeling agency, graduated from New York University with honors and accepted a finance position at a large beauty company. In September, she decided to leave her job and her life in New York to get healthy on the show. Which she did, with just as much dynamic personality and candor as she always had, only this time it was in front of millions.

We had the opportunity to ask Tara a few questions about her transformation, her time with Bob and Jillian, and the skinny on her latest achievement—starring and leading the instruction with other popular contestants (including Ali!) in BL’s recent workout DVD release. Here’s the 411 on this inspirational girl’s life post BL ranch!

FBG: You’re in the The Biggest Loser’s The Workout: 30-Day Jump Start DVD. What was it like filming the DVD?

TC: Filming the DVD was a first-time experience for me, and I had a blast. Sione, Ali and I worked extremely well together to put together exercises that were fun but also challenging. All of us were breaking a sweat doing these exercises! It was also the first time I met season eight contestants, and it was a great bonding experience. I was able to share with them how I am doing now and what things were difficult/easy for me when I got off the ranch.

FBG: How similar is the workout DVD to the workouts you did on The Biggest Loser ranch?

TC: The DVD workouts and the ranch workouts have many similarities. Jillian always liked a core set of exercises but would be able to mix things up when training me. The DVD offers many varieties to working out the same muscle group. The basic movements will stay the same, but as you grow stronger you can add in a little variety and keep it interesting. It is also great for the beginner because we say how the exercise can be modified. We (Sione/Ali/myself) understand that when getting into an exercise routine, you are exhausted after a few short minutes—it’s not easy, but it is worth it!

FBG: Do you own the new DVD and work out to yourself? That would be awesome!

TC: LOL, working out to myself is so weird! So yes, I do own them and use them. Lately, I have been traveling a lot, and sometimes I don’t have access to the gym, and it is too late for me to go hit the pavement. I am also a little wary to go running in places I have never been after a recent episode where a man was following me (and he didn’t want to talk about The Biggest Loser). Women: be careful and know your surroundings! What’s hard for me using this DVD is that I am so critical of myself. I hate watching myself on TV, hence why I still have not watched my season of BL!

FBG: What is your workout routine like now, after The Biggest Loser?

TC: Once I left the ranch, I went through a major transition. I had to create new patterns and get workouts in when I could. Life wasn’t about exercise then live—it was live then exercise. I really took a liking to running, especially while I was training for the NYC Marathon. Every morning, if my schedule permitted, I would run. There is something about the fresh crisp air that I could not get enough of. I would also supplement running with a yoga or spin class with friends. Now, I am actually training for the Rev3 series of triathlons (Olympic, Half and Full distance) and Heather Gollnick, a pro-triathlete, is training me! It’s just the beginning, but I can already tell it is going to be intense.

FBG: How hard was the transition from the show to real life? What is your secret to keeping the weight off?

TC: The transition once leaving the ranch was very difficult for me. For so long, I was losing weight, then it was all over and I was supposed to know how to maintain. I went through a learning curve. For me, every day is hard, but I feel so much stronger and healthier now that I want to stick with it. It really can’t be about a diet; it has to be a way of life. I can’t live on a diet, and I stopped living when I was 300 pounds, so it’s about the balance for me. I am and will always be a work-in-progress, but I have certain things in place that help me. When I am having a rough day and want to eat everything in sight, I take out my little black book. In my little black book you will find lists of reasons of why I wanted to lose the weight so badly, why I want to keep it off, memories of Jillian yelling at me to keep pushing and a few quotes that I like to read when I need encouragement. Also, I try to take it one day at a time. I put sticky notes around my house to remind myself that I get to make a choice every day—to live a lifestyle and that I CAN do it.

FBG: We know that during the show, you were logging three-plus hours of exercise a day. How much do you work out now and how has your schedule changed now that you are maintaining your weight loss?

TC: During the show, I was logging around six to eight hours a day! Now, I try to get in a solid one-and-a-half hours in the morning. At night, if my friends are up for doing something, I will take part in an activity (either walking or yoga class). This schedule will be changing though as I prepare for the Rev3 triathlon challenge!

FBG: While on the show, you were a fierce competitor. What fuels your workouts now? How do you stay motivated?

TC: Yes, I was a competitor because most if not all of the things I was doing were something I have never done before. Like pulling a car, being on a tight rope or running a marathon, I was pushing myself to see what I can accomplish. Most of the time I surprised myself. The feeling of surprise and “no way, I did not just do that” was AWESOME! Now, I want to continue to challenge myself and keep the awesome feeling alive. I have also come to realize I get the same feeling when I help others do things for the first time—there is something that happens in that moment, and I love to be a part of it.

FBG: What are your food habits? What do you eat in a normal day?

TC: I go through food phases! A normal breakfast would be veggie egg white (with one yolk) omelet, turkey bacon and a slice of cinnamon raisin bread or oatmeal with some dried fruit and nuts. For lunch, I love salads with tons of fresh veggies and a bean for protein or an open-face tuna melt with cup of low-sodium tomato soup. For dinner, I have been having lots of fish and various kinds of squash and steamed veggies. For snacks, I always have an apple a day, coffee or latte, and prepackaged trail mix.

FBG: Do you listen to music while working out? If so, what’s playing on your iPod now?

TC: I have such an eclectic taste in music. On my iPod, you will get classic rock, pop, country, instrumental, rock—really a little bit of everything. Right now I am on an Anberlin kick.

FBG: What’s it like to watch The Biggest Loser seasons now, as a Biggest Loser success story? What’s it like to inspire others?

TC: Watching the show now is nostalgic for me. I love how others are getting to experience what I did and that the network of people who can understand what I went through is constantly growing. All contestants really try to support one another! As far as inspiring others, it is strange for me. I never went on the show and intended to do that. I went on national TV because I needed help so badly. When people tell me how I was able to help them, it is a remarkable feeling. And I now take pride in it. The only way I feel that I can continue to inspire is to be honest and do my best to lead by example.

FBG: Behind the scenes, what are Bob and Jillian really like?

TC: Oh boy, Bob and Jillian are such characters. I feel like I am watching myself and my brother, Michael, interact when I see them together. They share a bond together that can’t be put into words. They understand that they are helping not only the contestants but also America transform—but still have a great time doing it. It is like a sibling relationship. There might be some bickering, but when it comes down to it, they are always there for one another.

FBG: What’s your current big fitness goal? And what can we expect from you in 2010?

TC: As I mentioned earlier, my next big fitness goal is the Revolution3 series of triathlons. The first Olympic distance is on May 9 in Knoxville, TN (.9-mile swim, 24.8-mile bike, 6.2-mile run). The second event, half distance at Quassy in Middlebury, CT (1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike, 13.1-mile run). And finally the full distance triathlon at Cedar Point in Sandusky, OH (2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike, 26.2-mile run)! I know—it is crazy, but I hope to be able to encourage others to take part in the challenge with me or at least part of it. I never thought I would do something like this, but why not give it a shot? All of you can be a part of Team Tara! As far as other things, cooking in the kitchen…I am in the process of writing a book! This book is not about my life, but more about what I have realized through a life transformation. It’s upbeat, funny and inspirational, plus I get to share some of my personal stories with the reader.

FBG: Any other words of wisdom or advice for our Fit Bottomed Girl readers?

TC: Don’t let “other things” get in your way of doing something that truly makes you happy. I understand it is hard to make time, especially time for you. For me, when I am truly happy, I am able to give more to my family and friends. Everyone is better off!

We’re sooo on Team Tara! Stay tuned for tomorrow when we review both Tara’s 30-Day Jump Start and Last Chance Workout.
With so many images of what’s desirable and attractive flying at us on TV, in magazines and online, sometimes it’s hard to step back and feel good about your imperfect, real self. But, if you’ve been a reader of FBG for any time at all, you know that we’re fightin’ that stereotype with a vengeance stronger than Vanilla Ice’s. We believe that Fit Bottomed Girls come in all shapes and sizes and should be celebrated for being healthy, not a certain pant size. And that’s why when we stumbled across the website My Body Gallery, we were thrilled.

The site features photos of real women with their height, weight, body shape and clothes size so that women can see what real women—not models— look like. Many of us have spent so many years looking at ourselves in mirrors that we can no longer see what’s really there. The My Body Gallery project’s goal is to help women objectively see what we look like and see that we are all beautiful.

We are beautiful, no matter what they say.

And because we can all use a reminder, we thought we’d share this list of awesome foods that we should all be packing in our fridges!

Top 10 Super Foods for 2010 (although we think they’re awesome any year!)

1. Almonds. Grab a handful a day to get your dose of vitamin E, an essential tool for the growth of muscle cells. Makes a great snack!

2. Blueberries. A one-ounce serving of blueberries packs more of a punch than most other fruits and vegetables. They’re also low in calories and fat free. A colorful and yummy addition to smoothies!

3. Eggs. New research is showing that eggs are more helpful than harmful for us and deliver one of the best overall sources of protein. Scramble ‘em up!

4. Kale. One cup of kale has just 30 calories but packs heavy doses of vitamins A and C, iron, calcium and much more. Add it to your favorite salad or soup for a vita-boost.

5. Low-fat milk. A glass or two of skim milk each day is the best way to replenish the most abundant mineral in our bodies, calcium. Each cup packs a solid 500 mg of calcium with only 80 calories. Get your mustache on!

6. Lentils. A half-cup serving of this legume delivers loads of fiber with just 115 calories and a sliver of fat. Find it in soups, rice dishes and international fare.

Credit: D Sharon Pruitt

7. Natural peanut butter. High in heart-healthy fats, a serving of PB (about the size of a ping pong ball) also delivers folate, vitamin E and fiber. Awesome on toast! Just be sure to buy natural so that you avoid those unhealthy trans fats.

8. Quinoa. A cup of light, nutty quinoa packs a punch of protein, iron and other vitamins. Try it as a hot cereal, add it to soups and salads or make your own quinoa pilaf. (If I can brave it, you can, too! Oh, but beware of rancid pine nuts!)

9. Salmon. This lean protein is filled with omega-3 fatty acids. Just keep your intake to one or two servings that are the size of a deck of cards each week as seafood can also deliver some unhealthy toxins like mercury.

10. Water. While not technically a food, it’s such an important part of your diet that it’s worth breaking the rules. Staying hydrated keeps your body functioning, your skin glowing and your tummy full. Drink up!

I’ve been known to imbibe in a beer or two on occasion. In fact, get me near a football or baseball game, and I’m almost guaranteed to have one. (It just seems wrong without it—all things in moderation, right?) So that’s why this recent nutrition research put a smile on my face: Most beers are good sources of silicon, an important component of bone health and bone density. My hubby’s fave type of beer, IPA, had the most silicon of the 100 commercial beers tasted, and light beers had the least amount of silicon tested, but still contained a notable amount. My personal fave type of beer, stout, wasn’t on the list, but I’ll assume that it’s a good source, too. Unfortunately, beer still has calories though and can have some negative health consequences, so moderation, moderation, moderation!

When I was a little girl, I loved to roller skate. There was no smooth, paved surface that escaped the wrath of my little white skates with the pink wheels. I skated laps around the driveway and garage (in my jean jacket, no less). I took advantage of unfinished basements and dreamed about having an entire abandoned store to myself. (Kmart always seemed a good option for this fantasy.) School skating parties were always a blast; not only did you get to do the hokey pokey and the limbo, but there was always the possibility that your crush would pick you for the couples’ skate. Those were the days.

I’d been wanting to see the roller-derby-themed Whip It to get my cinematic roller-skating fix. While I know there are few similarities between the rough-and-tumble nature of roller derby and the easy breezy laps I took around the rink, I figured it would be entertainment on wheels. Not only was the super cute Ellen Page adorable in the movie (loved her in Juno), but the movie was crazily star studded. Kristen Wiig, Drew Barrymore and Jimmy Fallon are front and center, and even Juliette Lewis plays a majorly bad-ass derby chick.

The movie, which follows Bliss (Ellen Page) on her journey from seeing roller derby for the first time to being a derby star, also had some great life lessons (some of which can even be applied to your fitness endeavors)! Who woulda guessed?

Do what you love. Maybe you don’t have a mom pushing you to compete in pageants when you’d rather be breaking heads on the track, but if what you’re doing isn’t making you happy, whether it’s running, swimming or playing the piano, take a break and find something you really love. The more you love it, the more you’ll do it.

Everything’s more fun with friends. When Bliss makes the roller derby team, she immediately has group of gal pals with similar interests. They lose match after match, but they have fun doing it. If you’re in a workout funk, get your best girlfriends together and try something new. There is safety in numbers, and you just might find a new passion!

Practice. While Bliss hadn’t skated since her Barbie roller skate phase, she wasn’t afraid to strap on her skates again. After getting her skate legs back, she was in tryouts, proving to everyone how fast she was on wheels. The take home message? When you’re learning (or re-learning) a skill, practice makes perfect.

Wear protection. Always wear that kind of protection, sure, but when you’re in a tough sport, be sure to wear your protective gear. Helmets, knee pads, wrist guards and mouth pieces will all help protect your bod when you’re getting tough, be it on the ski slope, the skateboard park or the derby rink.

Have a tough name for yourself or bad-ass mantra. Maybe you don’t call yourself “Babe Ruthless” or “Maggie Mayhem” like they do in the movie, but maybe you should. If you’re not that brave, simply having a tough mantra to repeat when you’re sprinting at the end of a run or doing that last set of reps will pull you through.

See? You can learn fitness lessons anywhere, you just have to be watching for them. And if you’re interested, yes, there are amateur roller derby leagues all around the country. Would you ever try out? —Erin

Over the last year and a half, we’ve given you a lot of good workout tunes. But, we’ll be the first to admit that we err on the side of bubblegum-pop most of the time. (Please don’t hate us for our Britney!) But don’t pigeon-hole us FBGs. When it comes down to it, we love anything that gets us moving.

That’s why when the lovely Ms. Elizabeth from Ten Thousand Minutes (awesome concept for a blog, by the way) suggested a more indie/off-the-beaten-path soundtrack for any cardio activity, we jumped at the opportunity. Here are her 14 get-movin’ tracks. You may know or recognize the covers of a few, but we guarantee you’ll find a few new gems in this hour-long playlist. We know we did, and now it’s on our heavy workout rotation!

Off-the-Beaten-Path Playlist

(4:10) Bette Davis Eyes, Sexton Blake: You probably know this track that was originally done by Kim Carnes, but believe us, Sexton Blake’s version is just as sexy and just as perfect for a warm-up.

(5:26) Banquet (Dance Remix), Block Party: After the warm-up, you’ll be ready to get moving when you hear the first beats of this amped-up track. It’s half dance, half rock, and full-out awesome. Use the track’s 5-plus minutes to pick that pace up to a medium intensity.

(3:29) Magic, Ladyhawke: So, I’m a little obsessed with this song. It’s just the perfect track to zone out to and get in the flow of your workout. (It is called “Magic” after all!) Maintain your medium intensity here, maybe slightly increasing your speed or incline.

(5:03) Kids, MGMT: You may have heard this one on alternative radio already, and it rocks. From the sound of kids playing in the background to interesting lyrics, use this song’s five minutes to slowly up your intensity to hard by the end. The song picks up as it goes, so it’s natural.

(3:08) Girls Just Want to Have Fun, Starf*cker: Don’t let this band’s dirty name fool you. This song is just as fun as Cyndi Lauper’s version, but with more of an indie edge to it. I promise it’ll make you hear the song in a whole new way. Return back to a medium intensity for this track, speeding back up to hard when you hear the chorus.

(4:45) Play Your Part (Pt. 1), Girl Talk: So this one comes with a Parental Advisory Label for the first 10 seconds, but it’s so high energy and fun that we had to include it. The song features a number of popular songs from all decades and genres. You’ll even here some Queen, and we’re in love with the “Walk It Out” part. Classic. Bring your pace up to medium-hard for this entire song.

(4:49) Quality Control, Jurassic 5: This slower yet fun-kay jam gives you the perfect break in your workout. Slow your roll to a medium-easy pace, recover and enjoy.

(3:17) Meddle, Little Boots: This is my favorite of the whole playlist! So pick that intensity back up to hard for 30 seconds, medium for 30 seconds and repeat three times. And don’t “meddle” with the plan. Just do it. You’ll love it. Promise.

(2:27) Cheap and Cheerful, The Kills: This may start out sounding a bit like a high school cheer song, but it’s anything but soft and fuzzy. It’s pretty dang in-your-face and dark, and we love it for that. This time continue those medium to hard intervals, but instead of 30 seconds each, up it to 1 minute each. You should be able to get through at least two!

(1:58) French Grass, HollAnd: Okay, now it’s recover time. Work that pace down to medium, then easy. This is a short song, but it’s a pretty one. Makes me want to go to Paris and drive around quickly in a Jetta.

(4:19) Crimewave, Crystal Castles vs. Health: Welcome to techno. My goodness this song is fun. Slowly pick your pace back up to medium-hard with this one, as you imagine yourself on a dance floor with only a disco ball shining on you. Just try not to do the Robot. I dare you.

(3:01) You’ll Find a Way, Santogold: Santogold is one of those artists that I just discovered and keep falling in love with every time I hear her. She is totally funky, poppy and fun. Very high energy. For this song’s full three minutes, pick up that pace to a full sprint. Believe me, the beat will make you want to speed up.

(3:25) Play Your Part (Pt. 2), Girl Talk: In this Part 2 of track No. 6, you’ll want to take a short 30-second break to recover. Then push it as hard as you can for the next three minutes. This is your final song before the cool down, so let the medley of tracks (there’s even JOURNEY on here) get you through! (And, seriously, Girl Talk is so fun, just go ahead and download the entire album!)

(4:36) Let Us Be Loving, Alice Russell: Cool down time! Slow your pace and intensity to easy and just enjoy Alice Russell’s amazing and smoooth voice. And say “goodbye” to those calories you just burned! Then go be loving to yourself.

A BIG thanks to Lizzy for the help on this one. Loved it! —Jenn
