Under Review: Carmen Electra’s Vegas Strip

I’m only mildly coordinated. As in, I’ve never fallen off the treadmill, but it’s only a matter of time. As in, I haven’t broken any limbs, but I don’t have the gene that allows me to do anything remotely exotic in my hip region. So I knew it would be worth my time to give Carmen Electra’s Aerobic Striptease: Vegas Strip a try. I knew at least I’d get a laugh out of it.

To prevent all possible embarrassment, I made sure the blinds were closed very, very tightly. The main squeeze was nowhere within a 2-mile radius (watching my awkward gyrations would only make him laugh), and the dog had her eyes covered. And then I hit play. Carmen’s cute, I’ll give her that. She’s bubbly and has a fun personality. So her welcome was very inviting, even if blush inducing. “The whole point is to feel your body, so don’t be afraid to touch yourself and have fun with it.” Whoa. Sex-y!

Carmen walks you through the steps, all basis strip moves (I’m assuming. I’m no expert.). Hip thrusts, side to side. Now touch your hair. More booty shaking. Now bend over and come up slowly. Now we’re workin’ out! She goes over the steps, a few 8 counts at a time, slowly. “Now, with counts.” “Now, with music.” Now, with abnormally long pauses while waiting for the music to start. Seriously, you could even see Carmen thinking, “This is awk-ward.”

The moves are pretty easy, but I wouldn’t say they came easily, exactly. I guess I’m just not a natural stripper. But the repetition allows you to catch on, and when it came time to put it all together, I was ready to strip it out.

Then out came the outfit changes—fishnets and high boots. Nice touch. And then out came the poor camera angles. In the attempts to sex up the video, the camera was tightly focused in on the fishnets and, ahem, dancers’ physical attributes. I couldn’t see what the heck was going on. I’m not one of those people who can just memorize moves…I actually have to see what’s happening to be able to follow along. So instead of putting it all together, I rested more on the final section than I did the entire time. I only broke out into a sweat because Northern California had a record-setting 100-degree day, and my apartment doesn’t have air conditioning.

FBG Rating (Out of 5):
Instruction: ★★★
Long-Term Likeability: ★
Music: ★★
Fun Factor: ★★★
Meets Expectations: ★
Overall: ★★

Fit Bottom line: No pole required! But the DVD is more of an introduction to stripping than a solid workout. But better than just sitting on the couch. Or in a bar. —Erin
