Fit Chef Katy Love!

I have a girl crush on THE most awesome chef in the kitchen. Why is she THE most awesome, you ask? She’s the first Jane-of-all-trades-chef I’ve ever met, and I adore those who think about fitness holistically.

My momma always said never trust a skinny cook, but it was next to impossible to ignore Katy (a former Next Food Network star, chef and fitness trainer) as she greeted our healthy cooking demo on a Tuesday night at Santa Monica’s organic food store, The Market. She bounced into the kitchen with the best energy, gabbed with the group about her history in the kitchen (home girl lived in China for years, working at a restaurant she owned called the Silver Spoon) and rocked my world when she mentioned liking to mix textures when she cooks; it’s all about the simplicity of mixing…and then she said it in Mandarin and my world was BLOWN!

Basically she’s no stranger to the stove, and she proved it when she started whipping up smart, healthy and quick meals right before our very eyes. She’s a mom of three, so easy is her best friend. She encouraged us to not be afraid of pre-washed salad mixes, wine or lobster tails that are ready for mixing. Accordingly, we have to be comfortable in the kitchen. I know FBG Jenn would have swooned at that point, too.

Before I knew it, she had created a three-course meal in a 30-minute time frame that was nutritious and delicious. We had a cubed dish consisting of lobster tail, avocado and papaya; a scrumpiddlyumptious salad; and for dessert, chocolate ganache that was so good I could have slapped my momma. It had orange zest and Grand Marnier, people…

A spread fit for a fittie!

The best part of the whole demonstration though was when she’d talk about the nutritional benefits of all the foods she had chosen. You could really feel that a food’s purpose was important to her. It’s where her balance of food and fitness really found a home in my heart. She was quick to point out that zest is flavor without the calories, mustard helps with inflammatory issues, and cottage cheese with popchips is a smartastic snack option.

Finding out she offers not only cooking classes and bootcamps but also inspirational workshops for women and young girls was the nail in my love coffin. Can a shero BE any more perfect? I think not.

Do you have a shero, famous or not, who’s doing the darn thing in the fitness world?  —Tish
