If you’re a single mom who’s keeping your eye out for someone special to breeze into your hectic life, then I guess you’ll know that it’s not really that easy. No matter how old your kids are, your life has to, by default, revolve around theirs, so it’s really not easy to get out there and meet new people that often. If, in the past, you’ve rejected the idea of going on any of those single parent dating sites out there, then you might want to reconsider. They’ve changed.

Now, despite what the world may have thought about online dating five or 10 years ago, there are loads of free dating websites out there now that do an amazing job of bringing great people together. I know, because I recently met a great guy on a dating site. And the main thing was that it was specially geared towards single parents, so you’re immediately meeting people with the same kinds of priorities and an ingrained understanding of what’s important to you—your kids. Of course, it didn’t happen immediately, and there were a few dud dates along the way, but hey, the thrill of the chase was fun.

Using a singles online dating website meant that I could get to know someone before dating them—the online chat facility means that you can talk to someone and gauge their reactions and feelings on things pretty quickly, and not risk your precious free time on going on dates that are unlikely to be a success. Of course, some people aren’t 100 percent honest about what they look like, what they’re interested in and what they’re looking for, but apart from their looks, can’t the same can be said for meeting someone in a bar or through a friend?

So how do you go about bagging yourself a dreamboat? Your online dating profile is basically a sales pitch—keep it positive, and don’t sell something you can’t really deliver. You can tell people about what you’re looking for in a person and in a relationship, what you like and don’t like, and try to let your personality sing.

If you’re ready to get into the online dating game, here are a few handy hints and tips:

  • What qualities do you most admire in a partner? You should also be mindful of the kinds of people you’re not interested in meeting, too.
  • Bear in mind that finding someone who fits your bill isn’t necessarily going to happen immediately, so don’t let yourself feel frustrated if you don’t feel like you’re getting anywhere quickly.
  • Beware—online dating sites, like any form of social media, can be addictive, so place a limit on how much time you allow yourself to spend on them every day.
  • Be yourself and be completely honest when you write your profile. You should also be very cautious about what personal information you give out.
  • Don’t be afraid to tell somebody you’re not interested or to back off if you don’t like their approach.
  • If you do decide someone is worth meeting in person, arrange to meet in a public place and tell friends or family where you’re going and when you intend to be back. Don’t rush into a physical or emotional relationship too quickly, and remember that it takes time to really get to know someone.
