Ask the FBGs: It Hurts After I Run—Help!
Hello!
Since we last emailed, I’ve been to two orthopedic doctors. One just wanted me to buy custom-made insoles (which were super expensive), and the other actually diagnosed me. He thinks what’s going on is called compartment syndrome. Basically, the muscle swells, which increases pressure, and that’s what’s causing the pain.
Anyway, I’m now going to be going to physical therapy once a week, I’m on anti-inflammatory medicine, and I’m wearing SuperFeet. I’ve decided that since the swelling/pain happens whether I’m running or walking to and from class, I’m not going to stop running. It does the rest of my body so good! But…I will have to get surgery if the issue persists with physical therapy. Oh, and I’m also running on less hilly areas and on a gravel path instead of concrete and pavement.
I just wanted to give you an update so you can have more info! I definitely had not ever heard of compartment syndrome, and it’s definitely something that people should know about since it can potentially be a very dangerous issue.
On another note, I’m now on week 7 of C25K and running 25 minutes at a time. That’s 25 times more than I could run seven weeks ago! I plan on doing the Bridge to 10K after this one, and then work my way up to half marathons and small triathlons.

Dang, Shannon!
So glad you went to the doctor and got that all figured out. We had definitely not heard of compartment syndrome before, but are glad you’re getting treated for it! Keep up with your physical therapy and listen to that body and that doctor. We’ll be cheering you on as you progress and keep reaching your goals!
