Peanut Butter Plus Multigrain Cheerios = Yum

Peanut Butter Multigrain Cheerios. Mmmm. 'nuff said.

I’ve made no secret about my love for the Cheerio. I’ve been a fan since childhood, and now that I’m a “responsible” adult with a Cheerio-munching kiddo, I belong to a wholesale club and I buy them in bulk. I have never been one to stray very far from my original-style Cheerios. No Honey Nut for me, thank you very much. I add strawberries and sprinkle them with a bit of sugar and get to munching. They’re a staple in my breakfast rotation and an easy go-to snack.

General Mills has gotten creative in recent years with the addition of other flavors—Multi Grain, Apple Cinnamon, even Chocolate—but I’ve never tried them. I’ve stayed true to my first love. Until they sent me the new Multi Grain Peanut Butter version.

First, I’ll confess. If you take my love for Cheerios and multiply it by 100, that’s how much I’ve loved peanut butter during this pregnancy. I don’t know if the baby has been asking for an afternoon protein boost or what, but I can’t count the days I’ve headed to the kitchen and eaten a scoop of peanut butter, straight up. So the combination of the Cheerio and peanut butter? Well, it’s pretty much heaven to me.

With a ¾ cup, the PB version of the Cheerio clocks in at 110 calories per serving—10 calories more than the 1-cup serving of regular Cheerios. There are 9 grams of sugar per serving, right on par with the Honey Nut variety, and I do wish there was more fiber and protein (2 grams each), but the taste really can’t be beat. It manages to be sweet, peanut-buttery and slightly salty with a sodium content that’s lower than the original variety (160 mg versus 130 mg). Now I’m just trying to get through some of my Cheerios stash so that I can mix it up with this new variety!

I do prefer to give my daughter the regular Cheerios because of the lower sugar content (1 gram per serving), but I did let her taste-test the peanut butter version. I’ll just say she definitely didn’t say “no no no no no.”

Have you tried the Peanut Butter Multi Grain Cheerios? Do you find them as delicious as I do? Any other cereal you’re smitten with? Let’s discuss! —Erin
