Turtle Time: Tish’s 10K Training Plan

10k, question of the week, training, run, race, rock 'n' roll 10K, brooklyn, brooks running

I live in running shoes lately.

In case you haven’t heard, the FBGs (Jenn, Erin, Tish and Kristen) are currently training for the Rock ‘n’ Roll 10K in Brooklyn this October courtesy of Brooks Running. This week, each FBG is sharing how her training—or lack thereof—is going!

Truth be told, out of the gals, I’d have to say I’m probably going to be the mushiest sappy one. There’s something absolutely inspiring and lovely about setting a fitness goal and completing that bad boy with your gal pals. Running a marathon with Jenn is still one of the most memorable moments of my life. I suspect I’ll have similar sentiments after completing this one. Yes, I realize it’s only a 10K, but it’s not really about the distance. It’s about finishing the race alongside of the women who inspire and push me on a daily basis. That said, I’m making sure to get in my runs so I can keep up with these powerhouses come race day.

My run days begin on Tuesday mornings at 5:50 a.m. I crawl out of bed, throw on my gear and hit the streets. I have to do the early thing because it’s bloody hot out there (even at that time in the morning!). I call my Tuesday/Thursday runs my prep runs. I get in 1.6 miles each day just to prepare my body for my big runs on the weekend.

The big runs happen on Sundays. I decided I’d build every two weeks. So I started with three miles and just completed my second four-mile run this past Sunday. This weekend, I’ll start my five-mile run. I’m just gently preparing my body for the day. I realize this is only six miles, but I’ve run a 5K before that destroyed me. I didn’t properly train because I thought three miles would be nothing…never assume. Always respect the run. Train, dang it! This time it’s all about the slow and steady build. Rabbits are cool, but I’m embracing my inner turtle.

I do all of this not to set a speed record, but so I can run alongside my girls without huffing and puffing. I’ll need that endurance and strength if I’m going to be laughing it up and thoroughly enjoying it all like a good FBG should! —Tish
