Nairn’s Cookies: A Sweet, Crunchy Cookie Treat

nairn's cookiesI don’t know about you, but when I hear that a cookie is packed with fiber, is low in sugar, has whole grains and is a healthy choice, I’m thinking that the cookie isn’t going to be too tasty. I tend to let cookies like that sit on my desk for awhile, as my nairn’s cookies have been doing. But as always in this line of work, I was proven oh-so wrong!

Nairn’s, a Scottish brand, has me thinking the Scots are doing something right besides wearing kilts. The cookies are vegan-friendly, wheat-free, contain no artificial colors, flavors or preservatives, no trans fats and include whole grain oats. Sounds boring, right? But their mixed berry oat cookies are yummy. Thin and crunchy with bits of raspberries and cranberries mixed in, these cookies are the perfect sweet treat that won’t spike your blood sugar. If you have a hankering for an oatmeal cookie—or any cookie, really—you can have two of these for just 90 calories. With 1 gram of fiber, only 3 grams of sugar and 2 grams of protein, these are cookies I can get behind.

To complete the taste-testing, I shared them with my daughter and she gave them two grubby thumbs up. My neighbor twins took a few bites and left them for later, but they regularly pass up their Goldfish, so what can you do?

I also tried the nairn’s organic oatcake crackers. With similar nutritionals, these were more bland than I like my crackers to be. For me, they were best suited as a vehicle for hummus or cheese!
