Food Fight: Simply 7 Pomegranate Chips vs. PopChips Popped Tortilla Chips

snack-chipsWe’re just a little more than a week before The Day of Snacking begins. What? You aren’t familiar with that holiday? Some people call it the Super Bowl. But here on FBE, we’re just as interested in what’s in the snack bowl as we are the score and commercials of the big game. So, for our first Food Fight—a fun head-t0-head nutrition-, ingredient- and taste-off—we’re letting two snackable chips go at it. Say hello to Simply 7 Pomegranate Chips vs. PopChips Tortilla Chips!

Taste and Texture

Simply 7 Pomegranate Chips: Light and airy yet still satisfying, these are tinted a little pink from the pomegranate, and they have just a touch of sweetness. In the flavors Sea Salt, Black Pepper and White Cheddar, we were biggest fans of Black Pepper, which was a nice balance of spicy and sweet. A unique—yet delicious—tasting chip that isn’t greasy but has more substance than a baked chip.
PopChips Tortilla Chips: Airy like the normal PopChips, these stoneground corn masa-based chips are light and oh-so crunchable. In flavors like Nacho Cheese, Ranch, Salsa and Chili Limón, they’re like a Dorito but smaller and obviously better for you. While all didn’t have a really strong flavor, we liked Chili Limón best. Kind of like Salt and Vinegar, with a Mexican twist.
Winner: Simply 7 Pomegranate Chips win this one but just by a hair—and mostly because of the uniqueness of using pomegranate in a chip!

PopChips Tortilla Chips: With nothing artificial and no trans fat, these are also gluten-free, vegan and vegetarian. The ingredient list is pretty clean.

And the Food Fight Champion Is…

Winning two of three of the food-fight categories, Simply 7 Pomegranate Chips wins it! With a cleaner ingredient list and unique twist on the healthy chip, we think these are worth sharing. However, we do have to admit that if you’re watching calories—or have a massive hankering for Doritos—PopChips Tortilla Chips are a very, very good runner-up option to try!
