Talking Food With Kearran Giovanni of Major Crimes

FitStar585Don’t you love it when one of your favorite celebs turns out to be a closet healthy foodie? We sure as heck do! So when we learned that Kearran Giovanni—who stars as detective Amy Sykes in the TNT drama Major Crimeswas a lover of things like raw kale salad and can make a mean cinnamon/pecan bundt cake, we knew we had to ask her about it. As you’ll see in the Q&A below, Ms. Giovanni is a yogi, healthy mother and a true foodie!

Q&A With Kearran Giovanni of Major Crimes

How is the character you play on Major Crimes like yourself? And not? Amy is smart and funny, but she has a little side of annoying mixed in. I was definitely that annoying girl who was a do-gooder growing up. I was and still am a people-pleaser. First in line. But Amy is much braver than I am. She volunteers for every dangerous situation without a second thought because that’s her job.
We heard that you’re a foodie. What are a few of your favorite things to cook? I love doing any kind of raw kale salad. I have about 10 different varieties that I can throw together. I also make a mean cinnamon/pecan bundt cake and a great spicy shrimp and white-bean bake…easy-peasy.

What’s a typical day of eating like for you? Coffee/water with lemon/Greek yogurt for breakfast…salad for lunch…three-course meal for dinner…protein/veggie/grain.

What are some ingredients that you have a “healthy obsession” with? Kale! Spinach! Brussels sprouts! Garlic in everything!

You grew up in the South. Any Southern dishes you like to cook? Any tips on making them healthier?
  • Crawfish étouffée: Use brown rice instead and/or use powdered roux with no butter.
  • Banana bread: Substitute applesauce and low-fat sour cream for butter and/or use whole-wheat flour and don’t over mix.

There’s a lot of pressure in Hollywood to look a certain way and be a certain size. How do you maintain a positive body image? I remember that actors are people and come in all sizes. As long as I’m healthy, it doesn’t matter. There’s a part for every size.
Anything else you’d like to add? Hmmm…pinch me!
Kale? Brussels sprouts? Greek yogurt? Clearly Kearran Giovanni is a Fit-Bottomed-Eats kinda gal! We can’t wait to try her tips to lighten up crawfish étouffée and banana bread, too! —Jenn
