3 Tips to Get the Kids on the Move


It’s hard to believe that in some parts of the country kids have already been in school for almost a month. Because here on the East Coast, kids just started this week! My daughter starts preschool today, SNIFF, so I figured I’d add to the “back to school” bonanza I’ve had going on today with more tips on keeping kids healthy this school year. Since we already included tips for a healthier lunch box earlier today, I thought I’d include these tips on keeping kids active to round it out.

The President’s Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition reported in March that less than half of kids and fewer than 10 percent of teens were getting the recommended 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous activity per day. Here are some tips from Natalie Digate Muth, MD, MPH, RD, a community pediatrician and senior health strategist with the American Council on Exercise, that can help combat those numbers!

3 Tips to Get the Kids Active and On the Move

1. Encourage a regular routine. Pay attention to the types of activities your kids enjoy. Then, help establish a regular routine of doing those types of activities in a fun and inspiring setting.

2. All exercise does not have to be done at once. Playing on a playground, doing chores, or walking to school all count toward the recommended daily activity. It’s all about substituting time that would otherwise be spent watching TV or playing video games with physical activity.

3. Make working out fun. The bottom line is that kids get bored easily. If you bring your child to the gym with you, teach them how to do circuits or incorporate resistance training into a game. If a physical activity is fun there is a better chance they will continue doing it.
