Workout DVD Review: Soli Beat (With The Fitnessista!)

Love dancing? Looking for something other than just Zumba? Oh, ladies. We have it. It’s called Soli Beat; and it’s darn fun.

If you’re a fitness blog junkie, you might recognize the gal on the right. That there is Gina, The Fitnessista, and one of our online buds. And by the time you’re done with the workout, you’ll feel like you know the other instructor Sasha Price by first name, too. Now, if you don’t have one of those fun jingly sashes, no worries. We didn’t either, but that didn’t stop us from shaking our tailfeathers.

With just the right mix of booty shaking and challenging yet learn-able (new word!) choreography, this DVD is an hour long and features eight dance routines that will definitely get your heart rate up. Pulling from West African, Afro Brazilian, Latin and Belly Dancing styles, there’s a little bit of something for everyone. And all of the basic moves are broken down step-by-step in a separate section so that you can master them before doing the routines. That way, when the beats start going, you just get to dance your little heart out.

Which is truly the best part of this DVD: it’s fun. There’s a live band there supplying the tunes with awesome beats and a fun African vibe, and Sasha and Gina are less “instructors” and more leaders. Kind of like how Zumba instructors teach in live classes, there’s not a whole lot of vocal cuing or talking at all — more like hand gestures and motivational “woots!” Seeing that this is a dance workout and not something where specific form is super important like, say, weight-lifting, this format is refreshing and works really well — especially as you memorize the dances as you do the workout over and over.

While we do wish a little of the music varied a bit, that’s our only “complaint.” And it’s pretty much made up for because the music is live and fun and oh-so high energy. It probably helps if you have some basic knowledge of dance or Zumba to do this dance workout DVD, but with time and practice, you could get the steps down.
