Looking to hit the powder soon? If so, these nine snowboarding tips from Learn to Ski and Snowboard (this month!) and The Professional Ski Instructors of America – American Association of Snowboard Instructors are for you! And if not, hey, check the snowboarding tips out anyhow so that you’re a total snowboarding aficionado for the Olympics!

9 Snowboarding Tips

1. Balance is key. Stay centered between your feet by keeping your hips and shoulders lined up with your board (imagine a minus sign instead of a plus sign).

2. Get control. Control the board with your feet and legs instead of your hips and shoulders.

3. Speed up, slow down. Use different turn shapes to control your speed. Pointing the nose of the board across a hill will help slow you down.

4. Adopt a low, athletic stance. Use your knees and ankles to absorb changes in the terrain and have a smoother, more controlled ride.

5. Look forward and down the hill. Don’t look at the tip of your board. This will help you to stay balanced.

6. Ride the powder! When in powder (not ice), think about surfing through the snow, pushing on the base of your board more than the edge. Keep your weight centered and maintain your momentum.

7. Practice, practice, practice. Before moving on to harder runs or new skills, get good at what you’ve learned. Be proud of yourself!

8. Keep an eye on your energy level. Only take on new challenges when you have lots of energy to burn.

9. Have fun. Snowboarding is a blast!
