Review: Amy’s Gluten-Free Frozen Meals, Brownies (and an Epic Microwaved Feast)

Amy’s Kitchen Gluten-Free Meals: Nutrition and Ingredients

First, let’s talk nutrition and microwave “cooking” time for each of these. I started with the Thai Red Curry.

Besides the high sodium, this is pretty good. Especially when you see where the fat is coming from …

Coconut milk, hooray! Also, note cooking directions — it’s a bit longer but not nearly as complicated as some of the other frozen meals I’ve tried.

Frozen, these things never look that impressive, but I was pleasantly surprised to see so much real food! And nice separation, Amy’s. Makes for a kind of pretty composition, even if it is covered in plastic.

Next, it was Pad Thai’s turn.

All in all, the nutritionals were very similar to the curry, albeit there was less fat and more sugar. Actually, kind of a lot of sugar. Wasn’t expecting that.

Hard not to be jazzed by these ingredients. Cooking is a breeze, too.

Straight out of the box, it honestly looked damn good as is.

Then it was on to the Light & Lean Quinoa & Black Beans with Butternut Squash & Chard. They pretty much had me from quinoa but chard, too? Oh, yes, please!

And it’s true: These are lighter and leaner. Far less sodium, too, and just as much protein as the others.

The ingredients check out, too! All real food.

This one was probably the least appealing out of the package — especially the gray matter that is the black beans — but, hey, look at all that butternut squash! Presentation isn’t always everything. (Nor is lighting for photos apparently … )

From there (yes, this was a marathon microwaving session!), it was Vegetable Pot Pie time!

Pot pies aren’t exactly known as “health food,” so I’ll take this.

Of the bunch, this was also the most processed of the meals we tried.

But, hey, it looks like a pot pie for sure! (And is probably the one most suited to being a frozen meal to begin with.)

Last but not least, brownies. Gluten-free BROWNIES! I was excited about all of the meals, but how can you beat chocolate? You can’t. Don’t even try.

And, dude, these nutritionals aren’t bad for a brownie.

Nor are the ingredients. Hey, I spy apples in there!

And a serving is one-fifth the size of this, which you can just leave out for an hour and not even microwave at all (what I attempted to do —  you’ll see).
