LifeIce Review: Kind of Like Bite-Sized Popsicles

I like popsicles. I like citrus. I like chocolate. So when LifeIce arrived on FBE HQ’s doorstep, things looked promising. These little bite-sized frozen treats are all-natural, fat-free, low-calorie and low-sugar.

The shelf-stable trays (no melting on the way home from the grocery store — and you can take them to work and freeze as a snack) are pretty self-explanatory. Pop them in the freezer and eat. The packaging is BPA-free, too!

And the nutritionals on them aren’t bad. Gluten-free, Kosher-certified, GMO-free and without any preservatives, they have 20 to 35 calories per serving of 24 cubettes — which is a lot of little mini popsicles! The ingredients are clean, too. I tried both the Citrus Chomp and the Chocolate Crisp and loved how they had coconut water and plenty of fruit in them. (The Green Grind kind even has kale and spirulina in it!)

Because each cubette is so small, they freeze pretty quickly, too. Within about two hours, mine were pretty solid.

And they’re pretty cute … (not to mention that “cubette” is about the sweetest word ever).

I tried these both on their own and in water. On their own, I really enjoyed the Citrus Chomp. I mean, I probably would have enjoyed it more if it wasn’t 15 degrees outside, but it was a nice and chill tropical treat that was fruity and not overly sweet. The Chocolate Crisp though? Ohhh, I was not a fan. And I really can’t figure out why. I like everything in the ingredients list — coconut water, cherry juice, black currants, cocoa powder, vanilla — but somehow those things together to me just tasted off. Not exactly bitter, but overly natural and just not right. Not nearly enough chocolate there for me to dig.
But, here’s where it gets weird. I also tried these in water, and it was a totally different experience.

The Citrus Chomp kind of just dissolved and didn’t leave much flavor in the water (I’m sure you could add more though and this would change), but the Chocolate Crisp I really liked! It was almost like a really subtle hot cocoa without the heat. Totally interesting and, quite literally, cool.

A carton of LifeIce goes for $5.99 and includes two trays (48 cubes total). While I don’t think I’ll be swapping these out for my usual nightly treat of dark chocolate or sorbet, it’s certainly a fun and healthy twist on popsicles. And talk about fun portion control!
Would you try something like LifeIce? Like the idea of cubettes? We have to imagine these might be fun in cocktails … ! —Jenn
