This Flip Flop Abs Workout Targets Your Core

flipflopcoverWhen Kristen reviewed the  DVD over on Fit Bottomed Girls, I knew I had to share it with the mamas over here. Because one of the areas moms are always looking to strengthen up after a long bout of pregnancy is the core. It’s not just that you want to look good in a bikini again — oh no. That may be a nice benefit of getting your midsection back (eventually), but for me, I wanted to be able to get my core strength back to do things like sit up in bed normally again or lug my kids around without my back hurting. Phrases like “bikini ready” take a back seat when you’d rather your muscles didn’t feel super weak, like a balloon that’s been popped.

FLIP FLOP Abs is named so because you’re constantly flipping from your front to your back and side to side to hit every angle of your core. Three workouts are on the disc, each 12 to 15 minutes long, and all require nothing more than you and a little space on the floor — perfect for busy moms who don’t have a lot of spare time. Kristen tried all three workouts in a row — which is probably not recommended, particularly for new moms — but she wanted the full experience, which she got! She reports that while a couple of moves are similar, there are no repeats, so you’re not stuck with the same crunches over and over.

Fitz Koehler, the mastermind behind the DVD (read the entire review and a Q&A with her here!), says she loves hearing from new moms who say they can feel a major difference in their waistline and that their backs feel better and stronger, too. So it’s nice that these workouts aren’t about slimming down; they’re about helping people function better, too. While there aren’t a lot of modifications and this is a definite challenge as far as postpartum workouts go, if you’ve moved beyond the standard postpartum fare and are ready to kick it up a notch, this DVD could be one to throw into the rotation to slooowly work your way up to, remembering to work to your level.

Best for: Anyone looking to strengthen their cores and learn some new moves. Anyone with a basic level of fitness will benefit, although beginners should be aware that there aren’t modifications shown for most moves, so the best bet is to start out doing a few reps and build up.

Anyone else think they’re up for a super tough core workout? —Erin
