Vega Protein Smoothie vs. Plant Head Protein

Calling all plant-based peeps! Today’s Food Fight is for you, as it’s pitting two vegan protein powders — Vega Protein Smoothie and Plant Head Protein — head-to-head in an epic battle of who’s tastiest, best for you and, well, just THE BEST! May the Food Fight begin … !

Taste and Texture

Vega Protein Smoothie: I’ve had some of Vega’s products before and found them to sometimes be a little too natural and a little gritty, but the Vega Protein Smoothie is pretty perfect. All the flavors taste great. Like, really, really great. And they blend up super well with no grittiness or overly strong aftertaste. Viva Vanilla and Choc-a-lot were hands down delicious, and even though I’m not normally a huge tropical or berry gal when it comes to my smoothie flavors, I still really enjoyed Tropical Tango and Bodacious Berry. I thought Oh Natural might be, well, too au naturale, but even that one was good! They’re all a little sweet without being too sweet and make for the perfect flavor booster to your smoothie — whether you’re adding fruits and veggies to it or just having it with some water or milk.
Plant Head Protein: You don’t think of something called “Plant Head” being all that tasty (Funny and awesome though? Yes!), but I found these to be pretty good. They taste a little more on the natural side, but once you add some fruit and veggies to them and blend them up with some almond or coconut milk, they’re tasty. The flavors themselves — Chocolate and Vanilla — are really nice though. More than just sweet, you really got the flavor of true vanilla and chocolate — with even a little spice behind it that was really nice.
Winner: This is a close one! Like, really, really close. I feel like if you’re okay with a little more natural tasting powders, you’ll love Plant Head Protein, but if you’re looking for a vegan protein powder that (honestly) doesn’t taste very “vegan,” then Vega Protein Smoothie is it. Plus, all those fun flavors … okay, Vega wins it! But just by a hair!

Winner: Based on only the nutritionals, Vega Protein Smoothie wins this one, too! Although, again, they were neck and neck. Just came down to sugar and calories!

Ingredient List

Vega Protein Smoothie: I know you guys are dying to know what the protein sources in these are, right? Vega lists their own blend of pea, SaviSeed, hemp seed and sprouted whole-grain brown rice as its protein sources. Also listed are all kinds of fruit and veggie powders, plus stevia. Not too bad at all. It’s dairy-, gluten- and soy-free with no sugar added. Holy plant-basedness!
Plant Head Protein: This one gets its protein from pea protein, whole-grain brown rice, whole algae, hemp and cranberry protein. Cranberry protein?! I never heard of that one, so that was pretty cool. Other ingredients include natural flavors (vanilla or cocoa), cane sugar and stevia. Also, dairy-, gluten- and soy-free, this protein is also free of GMOs and is raw.
Winner: It’s a tie! We LOVE the superfoods in Vega, but the cranberry and non-GMO-ness of Plant Head is pretty darn rad. So it’s a draw. Fair and square!

And the Food Fight Champion Is…

Vega Protein Smoothie! But this one was one of the closest EVER. And honestly, they both rock. If you’re vegan or looking to get more plant-based foods in your belly, try ’em both!
