Food Fight: ENLIGHTENED vs. Yasso Ice Cream Bars

Last fall ENLIGHTENED won a Food Fight, so today we thought it would be fun to see if the company’s new Peanut Butter and Toasted Almond flavors could go two-for-two and have an undefeated record against Yasso’s new flavors of Sea Salt Caramel, Chocolate Fudge, Mint Chocolate Chip, Dark Chocolate Raspberry and Peanut Butter Cup!

Taste and Texture

Yasso: We’ve written about how tasty Yasso is before, but these new flavors really take it up a notch. Chocolate Fudge, and Dark Chocolate Raspberry (even has a chocolate coating on it and a really nice real raspberry flavor) are really good, Mint Chocolate Chip totally reminded me of the same flavor at Baskin-Robbins but lighter (yes!), and Peanut Butter Cup was a clear favorite in my house. My husband is a peanut butter-chocolate fiend, and I barely got to try one of these. Rich and peanut-buttery with the chocolate? Just perfection. But it was the Sea Salt Caramel that really had me thanking Yasso. I don’t think I’ve ever had a more delicious ice cream bar. EVER. A little salty and rich and caramel-y, this frozen Greek yogurt bar literally had a swirl of delicious in it. I’m still dreaming about it. (Just be sure to let it rest for a minute or so once you take it out of the freezer — if you can stand the wait, it’ll make it even better.) While these are still light, all of the Yasso flavors are still surprisingly rich and creamy!
ENLIGHTENED: These  are light, airy and delicious. Like the Yasso, you’ll want to leave them out for a minute or two before you eat them, but they’re nice and creamy with great flavor. The Peanut Butter was sweet and savory and definitely felt like a treat, while the Toasted Almond had a serious foodie flavor to it that was more like amaretto than anything else. These are definitely more refined takes on the usual ice cream bar!
Winner: You can’t go wrong with either brands. Both of these are amazing. Like, go-buy-them-now amazing. That said, I can’t get that darn Sea Salt Caramel out of my head no matter what I do, so Yasso wins it!

Nutritional Facts

Yasso: The nutritionals change a bit depending on what flavor you try, but on average, each bar contains 100 calories, 3 grams of fat (mostly saturated), 60 milligrams of sodium, 1 gram of fiber, 13 grams of sugar, 5 grams of protein, and some calcium (10 percent) and iron (2 percent).
ENLIGHTENED: Each ENLIGHTENED bar has about 80 calories, 2 grams of fat, 30 milligrams of sodium, 3 grams of sugar (along with 6 grams of erythritol), 8 grams of protein and 5 grams of fiber, plus 20 percent of your calcium needs for the day and 2 percent of your vitamin A.
Winner: Again, these both rock. Like, seriously rock! While we’ll get into the source of sugar and sweetness in the Ingredient List section next, when you look at the nutrition facts, we just have to give ENLIGHTENED the win. With fewer calories, less sugar, more fiber and more calcium, it’s a no-brainer!

Ingredient List

Yasso: Made from non-fat milk, Greek yogurt, sugar and other natural ingredients, plus coloring from sources like beets and carrots, this ingredient is darn clean. Gluten-free (there is soy) and made with rBST-free milk and no artificial sweeteners, Yasso is pretty, well, sweet!
ENLIGHTENED: Also gluten-free and made with rBST-free milk and no artificial sweeteners (it uses erythritol and monk fruit extract), this ingredient list is also pretty clean. There are real ingredients used — like almonds in the Toasted Almond and peanuts in the Peanut Butter — and the fiber comes from non-GMO soluble corn fiber.
Winner: It’s a tie! Both are clean — it really just comes down to your personal preference on whether you’d like your sweetness to come from straight-up sugar or a mix of erythritol and monk fruit. Other than that, these are pretty much samesies!

And the Food Fight Champion Is…

With Yasso winning one category, ENLIGHTENED winning another and them tying on the final one, they both win! If you’re looking for which one is best for you, pick the flavor and nutritional profile you like best and nosh away! You can’t go wrong either way — promise!
Which flavor would you go for? —Jenn

Love Yasso Sea Salt Caramel, but have noticed far less caramel in them lately. I buy a box a week just for myself. I’d say at least the last dozen boxes or so were skimpier on the caramel swirl.
