Mom and Baby Yoga: Trying Mimi Z’s Parent and Tot Yoga Classes

babyyoga

Evan is so cute during Sesame Street Yoga. As soon as they begin their stretching, he mimics it. He follows along well and really enjoys it. I happened to be scrolling through Instagram (I swear I do more than just play on there!) and came across Mimi Z’s Yoga. Mimi is a traveling children’s yoga instructor — she does birthday parties as well as weekly classes out of local fitness studios. I found darling pictures of mamas and their tots doing all sorts of fun stretches. It looked perfect for Evan! We met her for a class at Fit Formula in Brookside, Kan., along with some other beautiful faces.

While the parents were checking their tots in, Mimi gave the kids straws and fun pom poms to keep them busy. They blew the pom poms around on the floor and were all giggling and enjoying themselves. The class started with some fun music to keep our bodies moving, all while stretching. Parents were strongly encouraged to participate — monkey see, monkey do, right? Most of the kids were regulars, and were extremely receptive to the class and instructions.

Throughout the class, all levels of the senses were being engaged. The kids were being shown controlled movement and moving with a purpose, without even knowing it. They were able to lead with cues from Mimi. As a mom herself, Mimi is no stranger to this age group and really prides herself in building the class around the needs and curiosity of the kids. The tots loved the parents’ involvement, especially when we built a tunnel with our bodies in down dog for them to crawl under! Although Evan was not able to stick around and enjoy it (he tends to get anxious in group settings and had to duck out), Mimi concluded her class with crow pose and the most important part for everybody: the relaxation at the end. I definitely plan to give this another go at it for Evan, possibly starting with a private class so there is not as much commotion surrounding him. I loved the structure of the class and Mimi’s acceptance of allowing the kids to be who they are, meltdowns and all.
